THEORY:

An amplifier is used to increase the signal level. It is used to get a larger signal output
from a small signal input. The transistor can be used as a amplifier, if it is biased to operate in
the active region, i.e. base-emitter junction is to be forward biased, while the base – collector
junction to be reverse biased. Common-emitter amplifier is constructed using voltage divider
bias circuit. The resistors RL,R1,R2 are biasing resistors. The input AC signal is given to the
base of the transistor. The capacitors Ci and Co are coupling capacitors. The output is taken
between the collector terminal and ground.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM: Common Emitter Amplifier

Note: Input voltage should be sufficiently low, so that output voltage does not exceed 12V

TABULATION: Input Voltage: Vi=

Frequency (Hz) Output Voltage (VO) Gain = Vo/Vi Gain(dB)= 20 log10(Vo/Vi)
PROCEDURE:

1. Connect the circuit as per the circuit diagram.

2. Set Vi= 0.2V (say) at f=1KHz (this is for checking purpose) using signal generator.
3. Keeping the input voltage constant vary the frequency from 10Hz to 3MHz in regular
Steps and note down the corresponding output voltage.
4. Plot the Graph: Gain (dB) VS Frequency.
5. Calculate the bandwidth from Graph.
CALCULATION:

Lower cut off frequency (fL)=

Upper cut off frequency (fH)=

Bandwidth= fH – fL=

Midband Gain(dB)= 20 log10(Vo/Vi)

MODEL GRAPH:
DESIGN:

Given VCC=12V, IC=IE=2mA,

VBE=0.7, hfe=β=

VE=VCC/10;

RE=VE/IE

Calculating RL value:

Apply KVL to output circuit

VCC= ICRL+VCE+IERE

RL=(VCC-VCE-IERE) /IC

RL =

To find R1 and R2:

VBE=VB-VE
VB=VBE+VE

VB=

IL=IC= βIB

IB=

From the circuit,

R2=βVE/10IE

R2=

Apply voltage divider bias

VB= VCC x[R2/(R1+R2)]

R1=
RESULT:

Thus, the common emitter amplifier is designed and the following results are
obtained.

Parameter Values

Mid band gain

Lower cut off frequency (fL)

Upper cut off frequency (fH)
