Computer networks

Fundamental Notions (4th edition)

This book about networks is aimed at both beginners who want to learn about computer networks,
like more experienced IT professionals who wish to reinforce and update their knowledge.

The basic principles are presented (standards, common architectures, cabling, data encryption,
topology, wireless networks, interconnection of networks...) and the different existing protocols in
computer networks (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ADSL, WiMax…) from an operational point of view,
without confusing the reader in an overly theoretical discourse.

The network configuration for Windows, Linux, Mac OSX, and Android is examined. The section dedicated to
Storage is presented in detail, clearly explaining the terms NAS, SAN,
zoning, Fiber Channel, FCoE, and iSCSI; the replication protocols between are also described
bays. The operation of deduplication for backups is explained in detail.
like the WAFS.

Likewise, a summary on virtualization is presented that allows the reader to understand the
problems, advantages and disadvantages of the different solutions on the market. Also addressed are
ATM technologies and other frame connections.

From a network hardware point of view, the Spanning Tree algorithm is explained, as well as the
Operation of VSS. Regarding routing, the protocols RIP, OSPF, and BGP are reviewed.
like HSRP. The TCP/IP protocols are presented in detail: in particular the decomposition into sub-
networks in IPv4, as well as a new comprehensive approach to IP addressing v6 (including VoIP).
Network services such as DHCP, DNS, NTP, or SNMP are also examined. One chapter deals with
the basic principles of security against threats that can affect a network.

The annex provides a list of the most significant acronyms in the world of networks.
informatics.
