Electrical Machines Exam

This document presents 5 problems related to three-phase induction motors. Each problem provides technical data about the characteristics and parameters of different motors (power, voltage, current, speed, etc.) and requests the calculation of values such as power factor, internal torque, loss power, full load speed, maximum torque, and parameters of the equivalent circuit. The problems address topics such as the analysis of motors under no-load, short-circuit, and load conditions, as well as the cal...

ELECTRIC MACHINES EXAM

INDUCTION MOTOR

PROBLEM No. 1: A three-phase wound rotor induction motor with 6 poles is connected to a
220 V and 50.5 Hz network. When it runs at a speed of 970 r.p.m., this motor absorbs from the network a
power of 15 kW and a current of 47 A.
When operating without load, this motor absorbs a power of 760 W and a current of 20.5 A from the grid.
This motor has its stator winding connected in star and the resistance measured between two of its
Terminal resistance 0.38Ω. The mechanical losses of this machine are 220 W.
Calculate:
the power factor of the motor.
b) the internal power in watts-synchronous and in Nm.
c) the power loss in the rotor copper.
d) the useful power in kW and the efficiency.

PROBLEM N° 2: There is a 3-phase induction motor with a wound rotor with the following data
plate: 30 HP, 500V connected in delta; 50 Hz; 1445.8 rpm and which was subjected to tests in the
laboratory with the following results:
500V
From the short circuit test: V CC = 100 V, I CC =32A and P CC =1.6 KW. The losses being
rotational of 0.9 KW.
a) Calculate the value of the additional rotor resistance to obtain maximum torque at startup.
b) S for efficiency max .
c) The frequency of the rotor current for the nominal plate conditions.

PROBLEM N° 3: The parameters of the equivalent phase circuit of an induction motor type
squirrel cage 3φ of 3.5 HP; 220V; 8 poles and 50 Hz
connected inY, they are the following: r1 = 0.22 Ohm, r2' = 1 Ohm, X2' = 0.6645 Ohm
The rotational losses are constant and equal to 180W.
a) Calculate the full load speed.
b) Calculate the maximum touch and the critical sliding.
c) If the motor drives a load at nominal and constant torque and a voltage drop of 25 occurs
%, calculate the speed, current, and the minimum value of the supply voltage without the motor becoming
stop.

PROBLEM NO. 4: A three-phase induction motor is connected in delta, it has a

power and an assigned frequency of 5.6 C.V. and 50 Hz, respectively, and consumes a
line current of 32 A when it provides its maximum torque. This maximum torque is 126.7 Nm.
and it occurs when the speed of the machine is 619.5 rpm. The resistance of each phase of the
the stator is 1 .
It is accepted that the vacuum current is negligible compared to the current when the torque is at its maximum.
Yes, in addition, mechanical and magnetic losses are disregarded.
a) Indicate the number of poles of the machine and its synchronous speed.
b) Obtain the parameters R'2y Xccof the motor, as well as the line voltage of the network to which it is connected
connected.

PROBLEM No. 5: A three-phase asynchronous motor of 380/220 V, 50 Hz, 30 HP, and 970 rpm has its
maximum to 850 r.p.m. and it is known that R is fulfilled1R'2If the losses are disregarded
magnetic and mechanical, calculate:
a) The network voltage if the motor is at its assigned (or nominal) voltage connected in a triangle.
b) The synchronous speed and the number of poles of the motor.
c) R parameters1, R'2y Xccof the equivalent circuit.
