Understanding Engineering's Impact
The people who have received vocational training in this discipline, and apply
Those who adapt their knowledge and skills in their field of work are known as
as Engineers. An engineer is someone whose way of thinking is compatible
with logic and abstract concepts, but at the same time is dynamic,
practical and creative, moreover, she is a person with the ability to work in
team, and is highly skilled in problem solving and uncertainties,
seeks to consider ways to improve efficiency in systems and processes, are
suitable for taking on leadership and possess skills in mathematical abilities.
At first, I was going to choose to study mechanical engineering, but I decided to lean towards
to study the field of Mechanical Maintenance Engineering due to its high employment rate and
the fact that I was more interested in things related to supervision,
management, optimization, conservation, repair, and restoration of equipment and
mechanical systems.
I envision myself in the future as a responsible Engineer with my work, someone
competent and collaborative with my colleagues. I do not have a fixed projection
about the industry in which I would like to develop, I would be pleased to use my
future knowledge in the automotive industry or in maintenance of
autonomous machines, but it's not something I stop to think about for now.
Mathematics and physics are foundational in engineering, appealing to individuals with interests in analytical reasoning and problem-solving. Their importance also lies in high job prospects, as engineering applies these disciplines to practical challenges, ensuring job security and growth opportunities in fields requiring technical expertise and innovation .
An engineer leverages both logical thinking and creativity, which is important because it allows them to apply scientific knowledge logically to create innovative and practical solutions to problems. Logical thinking helps them analyze and design feasible systems, while creativity enables novel solutions and advancements, ensuring engineers can tackle diverse challenges effectively .
Engineering impacts medical science by developing technologies and equipment that enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities, thereby significantly improving healthcare delivery. Advances like medical imaging devices, automated laboratory processes, and lifesaving surgical tools demonstrate engineering contributions that improve diagnosis accuracy, treatment efficacy, and patient outcomes .
An engineering mindset contributes to leadership and problem-solving by utilizing logical reasoning, systematic analysis, and a focus on optimization. Engineers apply structured approaches to identify issues, develop practical solutions, and implement effective project management strategies, which are critical in maintaining efficiency and driving project success in complex scenarios .
Engineering primarily focuses on the application and practicality of designs, creating solutions to real-world problems by using scientific and mathematical knowledge. It emphasizes the utility of creations and often involves teamwork to integrate multiple specialist skills, whereas science is more concerned with proving the validity of theories through hypothesis testing and experimentation .
Engineering achievements have driven significant societal progress by enabling large-scale production and innovation, notably during the Industrial Revolution, which marked a massive shift to mechanized manufacturing. This impact was profound as it increased efficiency, improved productivity, and spurred economic development, leading to new societal structures and improved quality of life .
Engineering complements scientific advancements by providing practical solutions that make scientific discoveries usable in society. This symbiosis allows technological progress by facilitating innovations with faster implementations and improved designs. Engineering uses scientific principles to improve and create new products and systems, which in turn drive further scientific research by posing new problems and offering new tools .
Different branches of engineering collaborate by combining their unique expertise to address various aspects of complex problems. For example, in a large-scale industrial project like constructing a new factory, civil engineers would design the structure and infrastructure, mechanical engineers would facilitate the design of machinery, electrical engineers would ensure adequate power systems, and industrial engineers would optimize the production process. This integration ensures that all components function effectively together .
Teamwork is emphasized in engineering because creating practical and robust solutions often requires a diverse set of skills and expertise from different domains. Individual efforts may lead to remarkable scientific discoveries, but engineering projects typically demand collaboration among specialists to integrate different aspects, such as structural integrity, cost efficiency, and environmental considerations, making teamwork essential .
Engineers are responsible for problem-solving, planning, organizing, leading projects, searching for new knowledge, and managing systems to optimize productivity. These responsibilities align with their technical roles through the application of mathematical and scientific principles, and with their creative roles through the design and innovation of solutions that meet societal needs efficiently .
