TITLE: 568F Propeller, Maintenance Best Practices

REFERENCE: N/A
EXPIRATION DATE: N/A
REVISION(S): N/A

This service information letter is being published to advise operators of the 568F propeller how to
identify potential corrosion, erosion and other types of typical blade damage seen on in-service
propeller blades. Some best practice information is provided on how to minimize the effects of
corrosion and erosion along with other line maintenance activities.

Subject to the EAR, ECCN [EAR99].

2) Blade Shank Preservation

a. Context

Corrosion scrap rate in bearing races and/or trunnion radius is increasing.

UTAS Actuation Propeller Systems advises that in most cases, incorrect packaging of the blade shank is
contributing factor (for storage or shipping purpose).

Corrosion in both bearing races Corrosion in trunnion radius

b. Focus on Shipping and Storage

SIR 140 PROP GEN was published in 2004 to remind airlines of good practices to protect 568F blade shank
after blade removal from aircraft. (3 steps procedure as shown below)

Subject to the EAR. See the first page for more information.

compound Ardrox 3140

SIR 140 PROP GEN is recommended by UTAS Actuation Propeller Systems since the blade shank material is
sensitive to corrosion when the blade is removed from the hub assembly.

3) Low Utilization Propellers

UTAS Actuation Propeller Systems advises of risks of corrosion for parked and low used aircraft.
If a propeller is not being used, it should be rotated 360 degrees once weekly to ensure all internal components
remain coated with lubricating oil.
UTAS Actuation Propeller Systems would recommend to conduct an engine ground run 1 time per week

Refer to table here below extracted from MM P5206 61-10-00 CHECK (12).
