Coco Chanel
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel was born in France in 1883 and died in 1971.
She was a Pioneering fashion designer who revolutionized women’s fashion.
She designed modern and simple clothes that were often based on
menswear. She was so important that she was the only designer named in
‘Time’ magazine's list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th
century.
Chanel had a very poor upbringing. Her mother worked in the
poorhouse where Gabrielle was born. She died when Gabrielle was six and
then her father abandoned her. She adopted the name Coco while she was
a café singer in 1905. Two lovers funded her first store in Paris in 1910.
They also helped her hats become popular with rich women.
In the 1920s, Chanel rose to become Paris’ top fashion designer. Her
comfortable, yet elegant clothes was popular across Europe. Women found
her mannish clothes to be liberating. In 1922 Chanel introduced her
perfume, Chanel No. 5, which is still highly profitable. Her famous Chanel
suit has also standed the test of time and is part of the modern woman’s
wardrobe.
At the beginning of World War II, she moved into the Ritz Hotel in
Paris, which becomed her home for 30 years. During the Nazi occupation of
Paris, she had a lover, a German spy. This relationship made her unpopular
for a decade after the war. Her 1954 collection did badly in France. Today,
however, her name is the biggest in fashion.

an impact on his songwriting. He left school at the age of 14 to make
music. He met members of his future band, The Wailers, at a jam session.

Jackie Chan is a true action movie great. He has appeared in dozens
of movies and is a screen legend. He had a simple beginning as a Chinese
refugee in Hong Kong. His early years were, perhaps, a sign of things to
come. His parents nicknamed him ‘Pao-Pao’, which means cannonball,
because he had so much energy.
Chan enrolled in the China Drama Academy to study opera while still
in his teens. He spent ten years there and worked part-time as a stuntman
in the kung fu movie industry. He soon earned the reputation as Hong
Kong’s most fearless Drunken. He moved into acting, but his first two
films were both flops. He quit the movie business and moved to Australia.
Several years later, director Ng Than Chan asked Jackie to appear in
the movies Snake in Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master. Both were
smash hits at the box office and Jackie Chan was now a star in Hong Kong.
Unfortunately, a former director tried to tie Chan to an old contract. He
sent the Hong Kong mafia to Chan’s movie sets to frighten him. Chan
moved to Hollywood.
He was not successful in Hollywood, so he returned to Hong Kong.
He learnt a lot about moviemaking while in America and used this
knowledge to make many successful movies for the Chinese market. He
also became a pop star. He returned to Hollywood and made the movie
Rush Hour in 1998. It made him a worldwide star.

J.K. Rowling is the pen name she uses as a writer. The J is for
Joanne, her real first name, but she prefers to be called Jo.
Apparently, people only call her Joanne when they’re angry with
her. The K is made up. Her publisher asked her to write using a name
with two initials, but she didn’t have a middle name.
Jo did a few different things before she struck upon the idea of
writing children’s books. She worked as a researcher and bilingual
secretary for Amnesty International and as an English teacher in
Portugal. The idea for the Harry Potter novels came from nowhere
while she was on a train to London. She said, “The characters and
situations came flooding into my head”.
Seven Potter novels later and Rowling is one of the
richest women in the world. In fact, she is the first novelist
ever to become a billionaire from writing. Her rags to riches
story is a fantasy story in itself. She was on government
handouts while history her first novel. Her last four books broke
records for the fastest sellers in literary history.
Today she devotes much of her time to many charitable causes.
She famously demanded that Coca-Cola donate $18 million to the
Reading is Fundamental charity if it wanted a tie-up with the Potter
movies. The future? In March 2008, she said: "I will continue
writing for children because that's what I enjoy".
