EDUCATION
- forms a holistic and significant part of any individual’s life.
- is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values and beliefs. There are many competing ideas
about education as an institution. For some, it is viewed as a socializing process while others
view education as a status competition. Finally, education can also be seen as a system of
legitimation, where it restructures entire populations, creating elites and redefining the rights
and duties of its members (Meyer 1977).
- mass education also known as public education, is an example of how education can
restructure entire populations and redefine the rights and obligations of citizens.
- can be gained in several forms through schools, life experiences and extra-curricular
activities. Education has no specifications or boundaries assigned to it. Therefore, it can be
broadly classified under three categories
Three Broad Categories of Education
o Formal Education
- is the one that works under the framework set by individual boards of education.
The orderly learning environment includes educational institutions, classrooms,
specially trained teachers, teaching equipment, extra-curricular activities,
competitions, examinations and a curriculum or syllabus. Formal education, as the
name suggests, is very structured in natures as proper guidelines are laid, and the
students are expected to work under these guidelines.
o Informal Education
- is the type of knowledge that one gains through several life experiences. This
knowledge can be the one that we obtain from our parents and elders. Individual
necessary skills of life that are important for survival and sustenance comes under
this category. It does not contain the theoretical knowledge of the books.
- example: home-schooling, learning to drive, cook, make specific arrangements
and booking appointments.
o Non-Formal Education
- Non-formal education is one that is framed according to the requirement of a
particular job. This type of training is not considered as a necessity but more of a
skill. Such kind of education should be promoted more as they are proficient in
catering to industrial needs. A proper framework can be developed in making this
education more mainstream.
Functions of Education in the Society
o Productive Citizenry
-a good citizen is someone who is deserving of the state’s protection and love
because of their behavior within the state—someone who would without a
doubt serve their society with the best of the families.
- education is sometimes viewed as the prerequisite to a productive citizen as
education helps citizens weigh out varying opinions and ideologies and decide
on which is a good decision for the society.
o Self-Actualization
- according to Abraham Maslow’s fundamental teaching the basic needs of a
person must be met before an individual can achieve self-actualization the
need to be good and fully alive
- education aims to find out expectations and life satisfaction.
o Primary Education as Human Right
- after assessing that education is a major contributing factor is not just a
person’s development but of society as well, it is essential that education be
provided for every individual in a society
- education as a human right began in 1995 through the UNESCO Associated
Schools Program.
Specified Functions of Education in the Society
o Social Control and Change—society is said to be dynamic and progressive and not a
station. Education helps every individual to develop their skills that are needed to control and
change the society positively.
o Reconstruction of Individual’s Experiences—education is life that is full of different
experiences which would make every person become an agent of change that is essential for
the society. This helps them to reconstruct all their experiences in life as well adjust with
environmental changes.
o Development of Moral and Social Value—moral and social values affect every
individual in dealing with the society. Through proper education, they would be given the
chance to acquire moral and social values which would help them become the reason for the
society to achieve positive changes towards success.
o Providing Equality and Opportunity—discrimination should be lessen if every person
would be given proper education which is needed for providing equality and opportunity. We
cannot deny that educated people are more successful in life and have greater opportunities in life
that is why every educational institution is providing good quality of education for people to
become successful in their career.
o Training Ground for Leadership—the quality of an individual in being a leader can be
developed through education that they can be used in participating in the spheres of political,
educational, social, and religious activities.
o Inculcation of Social and Civic Responsibility —education is the best tool for the rising
education to become aware and understand their duties and rights of having a democratic
country where everyone is given the chance to express and be treated equally.
o National Integration—people living in different countries are diverse that is why respect
of language, color, physical environment habits, dress, and caste should be adhere.
