Activity 2. Pros and Cons. What are the advantages and disadvantages of
institutional based correction and non-institutional based correction?

A. INSTITUTIONAL-BASED CORRECTIONS

PROS- The advantages in institutional based corrections. First, were the


offenders served their sentence in prisons and it also reduces the risk to
commit crime and it plays a significant role in ensuring public safety by
confining the offenders in a controlled environment. Second, were the
offenders have their free meal and they have the chance to make money or
small business inside the corrections that will help them to earn some small
amount of money when they finally served their sentence. Third, when the
offenders getting their parole for after many years serving their sentence while
having good character inside the corrections, also the offenders may have
their education inside, that the offenders may still learn what happening in the
outside. Lastly, rehabilitating offender inside the corrections and to ensure
offenders not to commit crime again to have their peaceful life.

CONS- The disadvantages in institutional based corrections. First, the


corrections failed to rehabilitate and reform the offenders while they are inside
the prisons, they usually committing crime again. Second, is one of the
dilemma facing in the corrections the overcrowding prisoners that may lead to
poor living conditions. Third, it requires a lot of money to feed a thousands of
offenders inside the corrections because of the overcrowding prisoners, it may
cost a high amount of money for their security, infrastructure and
rehabilitation. Lastly, unfair treatment on the offenders because some of them
often treated normally while the other treated like a low class human and
many offenders died because of these issue.

B. NON-INSTITUTIONAL-BASED CORRECTIONS

PROS- The advantages in non institutional based corrections. First, aside


from the institutional it may need a high cost amount of money but in non
institutional based corrections, It's cheaper than keeping someone in prison
since fewer resources are needed. Second, after the offenders serving their
sentence inside the jails, the offenders can help improve their life outside
even though they are still in monitoring, It is great opportunity to changed and
to get better their life. Third, after receiving their parole or finally serving their
sentence the offender it reduces the burden on overcrowded prisons. It allows
the offender to adjust to normal life while being monitored. Lastly, the
offenders must manage their own rehabilitation while being monitored and
promise not to commit crime again.

CONS- The disadvantages in non institutional based corrections. First, aside


from having a parole or released sentence the offenders have still record “ex-
convict” and some of the communities may struggle to accept former
offenders. Second, victim of crimes may feel unsafe because knowing that the
offenders are got outside from the jail and now involved in the community
because other victims may think that they will get revenge for the sentenced
that they serve in correction. Third, some communities may not fully support
rehabilitation efforts, fearing that offenders may not reform, it’s because of the
crime that they committed, they think that they will commit crime again. Lastly,
it requires effective supervision for the offender to prevent in committing
crime, to fully rehabilitate and reform offenders.
