67 - Surah Al-Mulk.
What has been mentioned about its virtues: Imam Ahmad narrated
from Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
said: "Indeed, a surah in the Qur'an of thirty verses interceded for its companion until he
was forgiven: Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion." (Narrated by Ahmad and
the four Sunan compilers, and Al-Tirmidhi said: a good hadith). And from Anas, he said,
the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "A surah in the
Qur'an argued for its companion until it entered him into Paradise: Blessed is He in
whose hand is the dominion." (Narrated by Al-Tabarani and Al-Hafiz Al-Maqdisi). And
from Ibn Abbas, he said: Some of the companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, set up their tent over a grave, and he did not think it was a grave,
and behold, there was a person's grave reading Surah Al-Mulk until he finished it. So he
came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said: O Messenger
of Allah, I set up my tent over a grave, and I did not think it was a grave, and behold, a
person was reading Surah Al-Mulk: Blessed, until he finished it. The Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "It is the preventer, it is the savior, it
saves him from the torment of the grave." (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, and he said it is
strange from this route). And from Jabir that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, would not sleep until he read: "(
AlifLamMimTanzil
), and (
BlessedisHeinwhosehandisthedominion
)." (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi). And Layth said, from Tawus: They are better than every surah in
the Qur'an by seventy good deeds. And from Ibn Abbas that he said to a man: Shall I give you a
gift with a hadith that will make you happy? He said: Yes. He said: Read (
BlessedisHeinwhosehandisthedominion
) and teach it to your family, all your children, the boys of your house, and your neighbors, for it
is the savior, and the arguer that argues or disputes on the Day of Resurrection with its Lord for
its reader, and demands for him to be saved from the torment of the Fire, and it saves its
companion from the torment of the grave. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, said: "I wish it were in the heart of every person of my Ummah." (Narrated by
Abd bin Humaid in his Musnad). In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
1 - BLESSED IS HE IN WHOSE HAND IS THE DOMINION AND HE IS OVER EVERYTHING
ABLE
2 - WHO CREATED DEATH AND LIFE TO TEST YOU WHICH OF YOU IS BEST IN DEED AND
HE IS THE ALMIGHTY THE FORGIVER
3 - WHO CREATED SEVEN HEAVENS IN LAYERS YOU DO NOT SEE IN THE CREATION OF
THE MOST GRACIOUS ANY INCONSISTENCY SO RETURN THE GAZE DO YOU SEE ANY
FISSURES
4 - THEN RETURN THE GAZE TWICE THE GAZE WILL RETURN TO YOU HUMILIATED AND
WEARY
5 - AND WE HAVE CERTAINLY DECORATED THE NEAREST HEAVEN WITH LAMPS AND WE
HAVE MADE THEM MISSILES FOR THE DEVILS AND WE HAVE PREPARED FOR THEM THE
TORMENT OF THE BLAZING FIRE
He (Allah) glorifies His noble self, and informs that "in His hand is the dominion," meaning He is
the disposer of all creations, with what He wills, there is no one to reverse His judgment and He
is not asked about what He does, due to His might and wisdom and justice, and for this reason
He (the Exalted) said: "And He is over everything able," then He (the Exalted) said: "Who
created death and life," and the meaning of the verse is that He brought the creations into
existence from non-existence to test them, that is, to test them which of them is best in deed.
From Qatadah, he said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used
to say: "Indeed, Allah humbled the children of Adam with death, and made this world a place of
life then a place of death, and made the Hereafter a place of recompense then a place of
permanence." (Narrated by Ibn Abi Hatim), and His saying, the Exalted: "to test you which of
you is best in deed," meaning best in deed, as Muhammad bin 'Ajlan said, and He did not say
most in deed, then He (the Exalted) said: "And He is the Almighty the Forgiver," meaning He is
the Almighty, the Great, the Unapproachable, and He is the Forgiver of whoever repents to Him
and returns, after disobeying Him and violating His command, yet He is merciful and pardons
and overlooks, then He (the Exalted) said: "Who created seven heavens in layers," meaning a
layer after a layer, and His saying, the Exalted: "You do not see in the creation of the Most
Gracious any inconsistency," meaning there is no variation, no disharmony, no deficiency, and
no flaw in it, and for this reason He (the Exalted) said: "So return the gaze do you see any
fissures?" meaning look at the sky and reflect on it, do you see in it a defect or a deficiency or a
flaw or fissures? Ibn Abbas and Mujahid said: "do you see any fissures," meaning cracks, and Al-
Suddi said: meaning any holes, and Qatadah said: meaning do you see any flaw O son of Adam?
And His saying, the Exalted: "Then return the gaze twice," meaning two times, "the gaze will
return to you humiliated," Ibn Abbas said: humbled, and Mujahid said: disgraced, "and it is
weary," meaning it is exhausted, and Mujahid said: the weary is the one who is cut off from
fatigue, and the meaning of the verse is: if you repeat the gaze no matter how many times you
repeat it, it will return to you, meaning the gaze will return to you "humiliated" from seeing any
defect or flaw, "and it is weary," meaning exhausted, it has been cut off from fatigue, from the
frequency of repetition and it does not see any deficiency, and when He denied any deficiency
in their creation, He explained their perfection and their adornment and said: "And We have
certainly decorated the nearest heaven with lamps," which are the stars in which the planets
and fixed stars are placed, and His saying, the Exalted: "And We have made them missiles for
the devils," the pronoun in His saying "And We have made them" refers to the type of lamps not
to their substance, because it does not throw with the stars that are in the sky, but with
meteors from below them, and they may be supplied by them, and Allah knows best. "And We
have prepared for them the torment of the blazing fire," meaning We have made for the devils
this disgrace in the world, and We have prepared for them the torment of the blazing fire in the
Hereafter as He (the Exalted) said: "Except for he who snatches a snatch and is pursued by a
piercing flame," Qatadah said: Indeed, these stars were created for three qualities: Allah created
them as an adornment for the sky, and as missiles for the devils, and as signs by which one is
guided, so whoever interprets in them other than that, he has spoken with his opinion, and has
missed his lot, and has wasted his share, and has undertaken what he has no knowledge of
(Narrated by Ibn Jarir and Ibn Abi Hatim).
6 - AND FOR THOSE WHO DISBELIEVE IN THEIR LORD IS THE TORMENT OF HELL AND A
WRETCHED DESTINATION
7 - WHEN THEY ARE CAST INTO IT THEY WILL HEAR FOR IT A SIGH WHILE IT IS BOILING
8 - IT ALMOST BURSTS FROM RAGE WHENEVER A GROUP IS THROWN INTO IT ITS
GUARDS ASK THEM DID A WARNER NOT COME TO YOU
9 - THEY SAID YES A WARNER DID COME TO US BUT WE DENIED AND SAID ALLAH HAS
NOT SENT DOWN ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT EXCEPT IN GREAT ERROR
10 - AND THEY SAID IF WE HAD LISTENED OR REASONED WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN
AMONG THE COMPANIONS OF THE BLAZING FIRE
11 - SO THEY CONFESSED THEIR SIN SO AWAY WITH THE COMPANIONS OF THE BLAZING
FIRE
He (the Exalted) says: "And We have prepared for those who disbelieve in their Lord the
torment of Hell and a wretched destination," meaning a wretched return and outcome, "When
they are cast into it they will hear for it a sigh," meaning a shriek, "while it is boiling," Al-Thawri
said: it boils with them like a small amount of grain boils in a large amount of water, and His
saying, the Exalted: "It almost bursts from rage," meaning it is about to split apart from one
another, from the intensity of its rage upon them and its hatred for them, "Whenever a group is
thrown into it its guards ask them Did a warner not come to you? * They said Yes a warner did
come to us but we denied and said Allah has not sent down anything you are not except in great
error." He (the Exalted) mentions His justice in His creation, and that He does not torment
anyone except after the argument has been established against him, and a messenger has been
sent to him, as He (the Exalted) said: "And We would not punish until We had sent a
messenger," and He (the Exalted) said: "And its guards will say to them Did messengers not
come to you from among yourselves reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of
the meeting of this day of yours? They will say Yes but the word of the torment has come true
upon the disbelievers," and thus they blamed themselves, and regretted when regret is of no
benefit to them, so they said: "If we had listened or reasoned we would not have been among
the companions of the blazing fire," meaning if we had had minds with which we could benefit,
we would not have been in the state we are in, of disbelief in Allah and being deceived by Him,
but we did not have understanding with which we could comprehend what the messengers
brought, nor did we have a mind that would guide us to follow them, Allah (the Exalted) said:
"So they confessed their sin so away with the companions of the blazing fire." And in the hadith:
"People will not perish until they have an excuse from themselves." (Narrated by Imam Ahmad
from the hadith of Abu Al-Bukhtar Al-Ta'i), and in another hadith: "No one enters the Fire except
he knows that the Fire is more befitting for him than Paradise."
12 - INDEED THOSE WHO FEAR THEIR LORD IN SECRET FOR THEM IS FORGIVENESS AND
A GREAT REWARD
13 - AND CONCEAL YOUR SPEECH OR PUBLICIZE IT INDEED HE IS KNOWING OF WHAT IS
WITHIN THE HEARTS
14 - DOES HE WHO CREATED NOT KNOW AND HE IS THE SUBTLE THE ALL-AWARE
15 - HE IS THE ONE WHO MADE FOR YOU THE EARTH MANAGEABLE SO WALK IN ITS
PATHS AND EAT FROM HIS PROVISION AND TO HIM IS THE RESURRECTION
He (the Exalted) says: informing about those who fear the station of their Lord, so they refrain
from sins and perform acts of obedience, where no one sees them except Allah (the Exalted),
that for him is "forgiveness and a great reward," meaning his sins will be expiated, and he will
be recompensed with a great reward, as it is established in the two Sahihs: "Seven will be
shaded by Allah, the Exalted, in the shade of His Throne on a day when there is no shade except
His shade," and he mentioned among them a man who was invited by a woman of high status
and beauty and he said: I fear Allah, and a man who gave charity and hid it until his left hand
does not know what his right hand has spent, then He (the Exalted) said, alerting to the fact that
He is aware of intentions and secrets: "And conceal your speech or publicize it indeed He is
knowing of what is within the hearts," meaning what comes to mind in the hearts, "Does He
who created not know?" meaning does the Creator not know? And it was said its meaning is:
does Allah not know His creation? And the first is more correct due to His saying: "And He is the
Subtle the All-Aware," then He mentioned His blessing upon His creation in making the earth
manageable for them, and making it easy for them, by making it stable and calm and not
shaking or trembling, with what He placed in it of mountains, and what He caused to flow in it
of springs, and what He made in it of roads, and what He prepared in it of benefits and places
for cultivation and fruits, so He (the Exalted) said: "He is the one who made for you the earth
manageable so walk in its paths," meaning so travel wherever you want from its regions, and
move about in its lands and its territories in various types of earnings and trades, and know that
your effort will not benefit you anything except if Allah makes it easy for you, and for this reason
He (the Exalted) said: "And eat from His provision," so striving for the means does not
contradict reliance, as the Messenger of Allah said: "If you were to rely on Allah with a true
reliance, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds, they leave in the morning
hungry and return in the evening full." (Narrated by Ahmad, Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasa'i, and Ibn
Majah from Umar bin Al-Khattab )مرفوًعاso He established for them returning and leaving in
the morning to seek provision with their reliance on Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and He is
the one who makes things subservient, the mover, the causer of causes "and to Him is the
resurrection," meaning the return on the Day of Resurrection, Ibn Abbas and Mujahid said: its
paths: its edges and its roads and its sides.
16 - ARE YOU SECURE FROM HIM WHO IS IN THE HEAVEN THAT HE WILL NOT CAUSE THE
EARTH TO SWALLOW YOU AND THEN IT SHAKES
17 - OR ARE YOU SECURE FROM HIM WHO IS IN THE HEAVEN THAT HE WILL NOT SEND
AGAINST YOU A HAILSTORM THEN YOU WILL KNOW HOW IS MY WARNING
18 - AND INDEED THOSE BEFORE THEM DENIED SO HOW WAS MY DENIAL
19 - HAVE THEY NOT SEEN THE BIRDS ABOVE THEM SPREADING THEIR WINGS AND
FOLDING THEM NOTHING HOLDS THEM UP EXCEPT THE MOST GRACIOUS INDEED HE IS
OF EVERYTHING SEEING
And this is also from His kindness and mercy to His creation, that He is able to torment them
because of the disbelief of some of them, and yet He is clement and pardons, and delays and
does not hasten, as He (the Exalted) said: "And if Allah were to punish the people for what they
have earned, He would not leave on its surface a single moving creature," the verse, and here
He said: "Are you secure from Him who is in the heaven that He will not cause the earth to
swallow you and then it shakes," meaning it goes and comes and trembles, "Or are you secure
from Him who is in the heaven that He will not send against you a hailstorm?" meaning a wind
in which there is gravel that will hit your heads as He (the Exalted) said: "Have you then become
secure that He will not cause the side of the land to swallow you or send against you a hailstorm
then you would not find for yourselves any protector," and thus He threatens them here with
His saying: "Then you will know how is My warning," meaning how my warning will be, and the
consequence of whoever falls short of it and denies it, then He (the Exalted) said: "And indeed
those before them denied," meaning from the past nations and previous generations, "so how
was My denial?" meaning how was My punishment and My chastisement of them? Meaning
great, severe, and painful, then He (the Exalted) said: "Have they not seen the birds above them
spreading their wings and folding them," meaning sometimes they spread their wings in the air,
and sometimes they fold a wing and spread a wing, "Nothing holds them up," meaning in the air
"except the Most Gracious," meaning with what He made subservient for them of the air out of
His mercy and kindness, "Indeed He is of everything seeing," meaning of what is good for every
one of His creations, and this is like His saying, the Exalted: "Have they not seen the birds made
subservient in the middle of the sky Nothing holds them up except Allah Indeed in that are signs
for a people who believe."
20 - OR WHO IS THIS THAT IS A SOLDIER FOR YOU TO HELP YOU BESIDES THE MOST
GRACIOUS THE DISBELIEVERS ARE NOT EXCEPT IN DELUSION
21 - OR WHO IS THIS THAT WILL PROVIDE FOR YOU IF HE WITHHOLDS HIS PROVISION
RATHER THEY PERSIST IN INSOLENCE AND AVERSION
22 - IS HE WHO WALKS FALLING ON HIS FACE BETTER GUIDED OR HE WHO WALKS
UPRIGHT ON A STRAIGHT PATH
23 - SAY HE IS THE ONE WHO INITIATED YOUR CREATION AND MADE FOR YOU HEARING
AND VISION AND HEARTS LITTLE ARE YOU THANKFUL
24 - SAY HE IS THE ONE WHO SPREAD YOU THROUGHOUT THE EARTH AND TO HIM YOU
WILL BE GATHERED
25 - AND THEY SAY WHEN IS THIS PROMISE IF YOU ARE TRUTHFUL
26 - SAY THE KNOWLEDGE IS ONLY WITH ALLAH AND I AM ONLY A CLEAR WARNER
27 - BUT WHEN THEY SEE IT NEAR THEIR FACES WILL BE SADDENED AND IT WILL BE SAID
THIS IS WHAT YOU USED TO CALL FOR He (the Exalted) says to the polytheists who
worship others with Him, seeking from them help and provision, denying them: "Or who
is this that is a soldier for you to help you besides the Most Gracious?" meaning you
have no protector and no preventer, and no helper other than Him, and for this reason
He (the Exalted) said: "The disbelievers are not except in delusion." Then He (the
Exalted) said: "Or who is this that will provide for you if He withholds His provision?"
meaning who is this who if Allah cuts off His provision from you will provide for you after
Him? Meaning no one gives and withholds, and creates and provides except Allah alone
without a partner, He (the Exalted) said: "Rather they persist," meaning they continued
in their transgression and their falsehood and their straying, "in insolence," meaning in
obstinacy and arrogance "and aversion," on their backs from the truth, they do not listen
to it and do not follow it, then He (the Exalted) said: "Is he who walks falling on his face
better guided or he who walks upright on a straight path?" And this is a parable that
Allah has given for the believer and the disbeliever, so the disbeliever, his example in
what he is in is like the example of one who walks "falling on his face," meaning he walks
bent over not upright "on his face," meaning he does not know where to go and how to
proceed, but is lost, bewildered, straying, is this one better guided "or he who walks
upright?" meaning standing straight "on a straight path?" meaning on a clear, plain path,
this is their example in this world, and likewise they will be in the Hereafter, so the
believer will be resurrected walking upright on a straight path, leading him to the vast
Paradise, and as for the disbeliever, he will be resurrected walking on his face to the Fire
of Hell "so guide them to the path of the Hellfire." From Anas bin Malik, he said: It was
said: O Messenger of Allah, how will people be resurrected on their faces? He said: "Is
not the One who made them walk on their legs able to make them walk on their faces?"
(The hadith is narrated by Ahmad and its origin is in the two Sahihs from Anas bin
Malik). And His saying, the Exalted: "Say He is the one who initiated your creation,"
meaning He initiated your creation after you were not a thing to be mentioned, "and
made for you hearing and vision and hearts," meaning minds and perception, "little are
you thankful," meaning rarely do you use these faculties, with which Allah has blessed
you in His obedience and carrying out His commands and refraining from His
prohibitions. "Say He is the one who spread you throughout the earth," meaning He
multiplied you and spread you in the regions of the earth, with the variation of your
tongues and your languages and your colors, "and to Him you will be gathered,"
meaning you will gather after this dispersion and scattering, He will gather you as He
dispersed you and will bring you back as He began you, then He (the Exalted) said,
informing about the disbelievers, who deny the resurrection, who consider its
occurrence improbable: "And they say When is this promise if you are truthful?"
meaning when will this happen that you tell us about, "Say the knowledge is only with
Allah," meaning no one knows its exact time except Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, but
He has commanded me to inform you that this is going to happen and will certainly
occur, so beware of it "and I am only a clear warner," meaning I am only responsible for
the message and I have delivered it to you, Allah (the Exalted) said: "But when they see
it near their faces will be saddened of those who disbelieved," meaning when the Day of
Resurrection came and the disbelievers witnessed it, and they saw that the matter was
near, so when what they had denied occurred, that saddened them, and what came to
them from the command of Allah was something they had not accounted for or
expected, "and there will appear to them from Allah what they had not been expecting,"
and for this reason it is said to them as a form of rebuke and scolding: "This is what you
used to call for," meaning you used to hasten.
28 - SAY HAVE YOU CONSIDERED IF ALLAH SHOULD DESTROY ME AND THOSE WITH ME
OR HAVE MERCY UPON US THEN WHO WILL PROTECT THE DISBELIEVERS FROM A
PAINFUL TORMENT
29 - SAY HE IS THE MOST GRACIOUS WE HAVE BELIEVED IN HIM AND ON HIM WE HAVE
RELIED AND YOU WILL SOON KNOW WHO IS IN CLEAR ERROR
30 - SAY HAVE YOU CONSIDERED IF YOUR WATER WERE TO BECOME SUBSIDING THEN
WHO WOULD BRING YOU A FLOWING WATER He (the Exalted) says: "Say," O
Muhammad, to these polytheists in Allah who deny His blessings "Have you considered
if Allah should destroy me and those with me or have mercy upon us then who will
protect the disbelievers from a painful torment?" meaning save yourselves, for there is
no one who can save you from Allah except repentance and turning back, and the
occurrence of what you wish for us of torment and retribution will not benefit you, so
whether Allah torments us or has mercy upon us, there is no escape for you from His
retribution and His painful torment that will befall you, then He (the Exalted) said: "Say
He is the Most Gracious we have believed in Him and on Him we have relied," meaning
we have believed in the Lord of the worlds, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and
on Him we have relied in all our affairs, as He (the Exalted) said: "So worship Him and
rely on Him," and for this reason He (the Exalted) said: "And you will soon know who is
in clear error," meaning from us and from you, and for whom will be the outcome in this
world and the Hereafter? Then He (the Exalted) said, showing mercy in His creation: "Say
Have you considered if your water were to become subsiding?" meaning going deep into
the earth, so it cannot be reached with sharp pickaxes or strong forearms, and subsiding
is the opposite of flowing, and for this reason He (the Exalted) said: "Then who would
bring you a flowing water?" meaning gushing and running on the surface of the earth,
meaning no one is able to do that except Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, so it is from His
grace and His generosity that He caused water to gush for you, and made it run in all
regions of the earth, according to what the servants need of little and much, so all praise
and blessing is due to Allah.
