Objective
1. Obtain output current and voltage of half wave and full wave rectifiers
2. Calculating the average and rms values of the output voltage
3. To understand the effect of inductive load on the rectifier
Theory
Rectifiers especially refer to power electronic converters where the electrical power flows from
the ac side to the dc side. During this process, an ac voltage or current source is converted to dc
voltage and current. A reactivator is the heart of power supply circuit where an ac voltage source
is firstly stepped down using transformers before it is converted to dc using rectifiers, after this
the produced dc signal is filtered using capacitors, where we would use diodes that work as
switches where we make some interval of the ac voltage source pass through and cut the other
interval.

Discussion Questions:
I. What are the equations that represent the output DC power and the output AC power of a
rectifier?
2
Pac =i rms R
Pdc =V dc I dc (avg value)
II. In the half wave diode rectifier, the average output voltage in the case of the inductive
load is less than the one of purely resistive load.
- Because behavior of inductors, which store energy in +ve half cycle thin in -ve cycle
will start to dissipate this energy as current, so the diode still forward bias for a few
times and output voltage follow input voltage in -ve half cycle for few times until all
energy in inductor has been dissipated, diode becomes reverse bias and output voltage
become equal zero.
III. What is the output power ( Pac ) for full wave rectifier of input voltage equal √2. 200
sin(𝜔𝑡) volt with resistive load equal 20 ohm.
