PROJECT TITLE :An Investigation into the Effects of Poor Waste

Disposal on the Environment and Health at Pamushana High School and Possible
Solutions Them

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
1. To investigate how other schools and communities in Zimbabwe manage waste
disposal.
2. To generate ideas for sustainable waste management at Pamushana High School.
3. To develop and test one solution to improve waste disposal.
4. To recommend effective, low-cost, and environmentally friendly waste
management strategies.
Stage 1: Problem Identification
Statement of the Problem:

Poor waste disposal at Pamushana High School has led to littering, blocked drainage systems,
foul smells, and increased breeding of flies and mosquitoes. This endangers both the
environment and student health .This therefore affects Students, teachers, non-teaching staff,
and indirectly the nearby [Link] problem is prominent at Pamushana High School’s
classrooms, dining areas, sports fields, and surroundings.

Statement of Intent:
I will investigate the problem of poor waste disposal at Pamushana High School, research solutions
used in other Zimbabwean schools and communities, propose ideas, and develop one practical solution
to improve hygiene and reduce health risks.

Design Specifications:
The project will consist of:
• Research findings with /illustrations.
• graphs showing results.
• awareness posters).
• Testing of one selected solution.

Materials/Resources to be used:

• Poster design materials.

• Data recording sheets.
• Textbooks
• internet
Stage 2: Investigation of Related Ideas
The following ways are those that have been used before and else where to reduce
the same problem

1. Use of Designated Dustbins – (Kyle college)

Schools placed labelled bins for plastics, papers, and organic waste.
• Strengths: Reduced littering; encouraged recycling.
• Weaknesses: Bins overflowed when not emptied on time.

2. Burning of Waste in Pits – (Mashoko High school)

Schools dug pits where waste was burnt daily.
• Strengths: Cheap and easy to manage.
• Weaknesses: Air pollution and incomplete burning left harmful residue.

3. Composting of Organic Waste – (Silveira High)

Food and garden waste was composted and used as manure.
• Strengths: Eco-friendly; provided manure for school gardens.
• Weaknesses: Needed training and supervision; slow process.

4. Awareness Campaigns & Posters – (Masvingo City Council)

Students were educated on waste disposal through posters and drama clubs.
• Strengths: Raised awareness effectively; cheap.
• Weaknesses: Some students ignored the messages.
Stage 3: Generation of Ideas
The following are the ideas I came up with

1. Colour-Coded Dustbins
Placing labelled bins for different waste types around the school.
• Strengths: Easy sorting of waste; encourages recycling.
• Weaknesses: Needs regular emptying and monitoring.

2. Composting Organic Waste

Food leftovers and garden waste can be composted for the school garden.
• Strengths: Eco-friendly; produces natural manure.
• Weaknesses: Requires supervision; not suitable for plastics.

3. Recycling and Selling Plastics

Partnering with recycling companies to collect plastics and cans.
• Strengths: Generates income for the school; reduces litter.
• Weaknesses: Requires transport and storage.

4. Waste Management Awareness Posters

Students design and display posters promoting cleanliness.
• Strengths: Cheap; builds student responsibility.
• Weaknesses: Only effective if followed with action.

Stage 4: Development of Selected Idea

Chosen Solution: Colour-Coded Dustbins combined with Awareness Posters.
Why Chosen:
• Practical, low-cost, and easy to implement.
• Encourages student responsibility and recycling.
• Immediate visual change in school environment.

Materials Needed:
• Plastic bins (different colours).
• Paint or labels for marking bins.
• Chart papers and markers for posters.

Process:
1. Place bins in strategic areas (classrooms, dining hall, sports grounds).
2. Label bins for “Plastics,” “Paper,” and “Organic Waste.”
3. Design posters reminding students to dispose of waste properly.
4. Monitor effectiveness over two weeks.
Stage 5: Presentation of Results
Testing:
A sample of 50 students was surveyed after introduction of bins and posters.
Results:
• 30 said littering reduced.
• 12 said environment improved slightly.
• 8 said there was no big change.
Statistical Analysis:
• Mean satisfaction score (out of 5): 3.8
• Mode: 4
• Median: 4
• % improvement in cleanliness: 60%
Stage 6: Evaluation and Recommendations
Evaluation:
• Problems faced:
• Some bins filled quickly;
• posters were ignored by a few students.
• How they were overcome:
• Prefects were assigned to monitor
• bins were emptied daily.

Recommendations:
1. Pamushana High School should maintain the colour-coded bin system.
2. Composting should be introduced for organic waste to reduce landfill.
3. Recycling partnerships with companies should be established for plastics.
4. Regular awareness campaigns should continue to sustain good habits.

The statistical analysis supported the evaluation by providing quantitative metrics such as the mean satisfaction score of 3.8 out of 5, a mode of 4, and a 60% improvement in school cleanliness. These metrics helped in objectively assessing the effectiveness of the waste disposal solutions implemented .

The combination of color-coded dustbins and awareness posters was effective in improving waste disposal practices at Pamushana High School by encouraging recycling and student responsibility. However, challenges such as bins filling quickly and some students ignoring posters were noted. These were mitigated by assigning prefects to monitor bins and daily waste removal .

Student involvement was crucial for implementing the solutions, particularly in designing awareness posters and monitoring waste disposal practices. The outcomes observed included a reduction in littering, as reported by 30 out of 50 surveyed students, with an overall improvement in cleanliness by 60% .

Key resources included plastic bins, paint or labels for bins, chart papers, and markers for posters. These materials facilitated the sorting of waste and raised awareness among students, directly contributing to the objectives of improving waste disposal practices and promoting recycling and environmental responsibility .

Establishing recycling partnerships with companies could reduce the volume of non-biodegradable waste in landfills, promote sustainable use of resources, and generate income for schools. These benefits support ecological sustainability by encouraging responsible recycling, minimizing environmental pollution, and fostering a circular economy within the school community .

The research project at Pamushana High School involved identifying the waste disposal problems and then investigating management strategies used in other Zimbabwean schools. The project generated sustainable ideas, developed, and tested solutions such as color-coded dustbins and awareness posters, and presented findings through research illustrations and statistical analyses .

The strengths of composting waste include its eco-friendliness and its ability to produce natural manure for school gardens. However, its effectiveness is hindered by the need for training and supervision, and the slow process involved, meaning it is not suitable for all types of waste such as plastics .

Recommendations included maintaining the color-coded bin system for ease of waste sorting, introducing composting to reduce landfill waste, establishing recycling partnerships for plastics, and continuing regular awareness campaigns to sustain good waste disposal habits. These strategies promote environmental responsibility, reduce waste, and enhance school cleanliness in a low-cost manner .

The main weaknesses of awareness campaigns and posters include limited impact when not followed by action. To address this, integrating practical exercises, continuous engagement with students, and regular evaluations can enhance participation. Programs could involve students in planning campaigns and creatively re-designing materials to keep the initiatives dynamic and engaging .

Poor waste disposal at Pamushana High School led to littering, blocked drainage systems, foul smells, and increased breeding of flies and mosquitoes. These issues endangered the environment and posed health risks to students, teachers, and the non-teaching staff, while indirectly affecting the surrounding community as well .
