EXPERIMENT NO 8: Realize the following shift registers using IC7474/7495
(i)SISO (ii) SIPO (iii)) PISO (iv) PIPO (v) Ring (vi) Johnson
counter.
AIM: To realise SIPO, SISO, PISO, PIPO operations Ring and Johnson counters using
IC7495/7474.
COMPONENTS REQUIRED: IC7495/7474, IC 7404, patch cords, trainer kits.
The group of flip-flops, which are used to hold store the binary data is known as [Link]
the register is capable of shifting bits either towards right hand side or towards left hand side
is known as shift register. An 'N' bit shift register contains 'N' flip-flops. Shift register is used
as parallel to serial converter, serial to parallel converter, sequence generator, counter…
Procedure:-
1) Verify all the components and path-chords whether they are in good conditions.
2) Serial – in –right operation: Connect M to logic ‘0’ and apply serial data at the
serial input terminal starting from the LSB. Apply the clock pulses at the clock-1
terminal. And observe the output QA, QB, QC and QD. Verify its operation as a
right Shift register. The output can be taken in the form at Q A, QB, QC, and QD
after entering the data. For talking out the data in serial form apply clock pulses
at clock-2 and take the output at QD.
3) Parallel – in – shift registers: Connect M to logic ‘1’ and apply the parallel 4 –bit
data at A, B, C, and D input. Apply one clock at clock -2, and observe the
outputs at QA, QB, QC and QD. The data can be taken out in the serial or parallel
form.
4) For Parallel –in – Serial – out make mode control pin 6 to ‘0’ stat and apply
CLK pulses at CLK -1 terminal and observe the outputs at QD.
5) Make connection as shown in the circuit diagram.
6) Give supply to the trainer kit.
7) Provide the input data to the circuit via switches.
8) Verify the truth table sequences and observe the outputs.
Serial in Serial out and Serial in Parallel out
Parallel in Parallel out, Parallel in Serial out
Ring counter: Ring counter is basic register with direct feedback such that the contents of
the register simply circulate around the register when the clock is running .Here the last
output that is QD in a shift register is connected back to the serial input. A basic ring counter
can be slightly modified to produce another type of shift register counter called Johnson
counter. Here complement of last output is connected back to the not gate input and not gate
output is connected back to serial input. A four bit Johnson counter gives 8 state output.
Result: Realized truth table of all shift register and counters.
