During the Social Media & Mobile Internet Era, governments worldwide began enacting regulations to address growing concerns over privacy and data security. For instance, the European Union introduced the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018, which set strict data protection and privacy standards . These regulations aimed to protect users' personal data amidst increasing data breaches and misuse by platforms, reflecting a shift in governmental policy towards stringent digital privacy measures .

The launch of the iPhone in 2007 revolutionized mobile internet usage by integrating smartphone technology with a simplified interface, fostering widespread adoption of mobile browsing and applications. It accelerated the development of mobile operating systems and app ecosystems, leading to a surge in digital technology use and innovation . This pivotal moment initiated a shift towards mobile-first strategies in technology development and expanded the potential for mobile e-commerce and social connectivity .

The Web 2.0 Era significantly impacted society by evolving from static web pages to dynamic and interactive content. This era enabled user-generated content and the concept of social networking, most notably through platforms like Facebook and YouTube . It democratized content creation, allowing individuals to become publishers and influencers, which shifted media consumption and the nature of online interactions. However, it also raised issues related to privacy, data security, and digital literacy .

The Web 3.0 Era emphasized the integration of decentralized technologies and artificial intelligence, creating more intelligent and personalized user experiences. AI technologies facilitated more sophisticated data analysis, semantic web capabilities, and more effective automation processes, enhancing the internet's utility and efficiency . This era's innovations supported advancements in machine learning and big data analytics, which are foundational for self-improving systems and smart applications .

ARPANET's development was pivotal in establishing packet-switching technology, which became fundamental to network communications. It introduced protocols such as NCP (Network Control Protocol), which later influenced the development of TCP/IP protocols, the backbone of modern internet data transmission systems . The collaborative nature of ARPANET served as a precursor to modern networking and laid the groundwork for global connectivity .

The transition from the Early Internet/ARPANET Era to the World Wide Web Boom was marked by the creation and adoption of the World Wide Web, which introduced a more user-friendly interface compared to text-based networks. Key technologies included HTML (for web pages), HTTP (for data transfer), and URL systems that made web navigation easier . Additionally, during this boom, the Mosaic web browser played a critical role by making the web more accessible to the general public .

The Cambridge Analytica scandal raised significant ethical concerns about data privacy, consent, and manipulation through analytical profiling. The scandal highlighted how massive data collection could be used to influence political campaigns without users' explicit consent . These issues remain relevant today as they underscore the need for stringent data protection regulations and ethical considerations in the collection and use of personal data by digital media companies .

During the ARPANET era, the internet was largely perceived as a niche technology limited to academia and research institutions, with little public understanding or interest . It wasn't seen as a consumer technology but as an advanced communication tool for specialists. Conversely, the Web 2.0 Era saw the internet become mainstream with widespread public engagement through social media, user-generated content, and interactive platforms, transforming it into a vital part of daily life and culture .

The rise of Blockchain and NFTs in the 2020s teaches significant lessons about decentralization, security, and ownership on the internet. Blockchain provides a more secure and transparent method for data transactions, challenging traditional centralized models . NFTs introduce concepts of digital scarcity and ownership, which have implications for intellectual property and economics in the digital space . These technologies emphasize the need for new frameworks in digital governance, ethics, and regulation as they continue to evolve and shape future internet development .

The development of the World Wide Web in the 1990s dramatically influenced global business practices by enabling e-commerce, digital marketing, and online customer interactions. This technological advancement allowed companies to reach wider markets with lower overhead costs and introduced innovative business models like online retail and digital advertising . Businesses rapidly adopted web technologies to improve efficiency, customer outreach, and competitive advantage, leading to a globalized economy more reliant on digital infrastructure .
