Comprehensive Notes on Adverbs

For Grade 4 Pupils


Definition of Adverb
An **adverb** is a word that tells us more about a verb, an adjective, or another
adverb. It gives extra information such as how, when, where, how often, or to what
extent an action happens.

Adverbs of Manner
• Tell us HOW an action is done.
• Examples: She sings beautifully. He runs quickly. The baby cried loudly.

Adverbs of Place
• Tell us WHERE an action happens.
• Examples: The children are playing outside. She looked everywhere. Come here.

Adverbs of Time
• Tell us WHEN an action happens.
• Examples: I will call you tomorrow. She came yesterday. We are eating now.

Adverbs of Frequency
• Tell us HOW OFTEN an action happens.
• Examples: I always brush my teeth. She sometimes plays football. They never
come late.

Adverbs of Degree
• Tell us HOW MUCH or TO WHAT EXTENT something happens.
• Examples: She is very happy. I am too tired. The boy is almost ready. He runs so
fast.

Difference Between Adjectives and Adverbs
An **adjective** describes a noun or pronoun, while an **adverb** describes a
verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
