OBJECTIVES OF THE COMMUNITY CONNECT
I wished to collaborate with the Environmental Foundation of India (E.F.I) to actively participate in
practical environmental preservation efforts. E.F.I provides a broad spectrum of services aimed at
revitalizing and safeguarding natural ecosystems, such as coordinating extensive beach cleanups, lake
restoration initiatives, afforestation campaigns, and outreach efforts geared towards fostering environmental
sustainability. Our team took part in numerous activities, working collaboratively to clean beaches and lakes
by eliminating plastic waste, discarded fishing nets, and other forms of contamination. We also aided in
removing invasive plant species that disturb local ecosystems, helping to restore the natural charm of these
areas while enhancing biodiversity. One of the reasons we decided to partner with E.F.I is the organization's
comprehensive approach to environmental preservation, which integrates practical restoration work with
educational outreach. E.F.I has an impressive history of effectively mobilizing volunteers and cultivating a
sense of shared responsibility for protecting the environment. Their community-level engagement in tackling
urgent environmental challenges such as pollution, water scarcity, and habitat loss strongly resonated with
our team. Additionally, E.F.I’s dedication to generating long-term, sustainable effects on local ecosystems
corresponds with our mutual belief in taking proactive measures to safeguard the environment for future
generations.
Our team was particularly motivated by E.F.I’s community-focused strategy. Through its various
educational programs, E.F.I inspires individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage in environmental
stewardship, making it an ideal platform for us to contribute both physically and by raising awareness. By
collaborating with E.F.I, we believed we could create a lasting impact not only by rehabilitating damaged
environments but also by informing the public about the importance of ecological conservation, waste
management, and sustainable living.

Water bodies and water sources in India have historically suffered due to human disregard. From
unregulated pollution to excessive industrial waste disposal, numerous essential water resources have
become significantly polluted. The Environmentalist Foundation of India (E.F.I) was founded to tackle this
urgent issue, with a strong emphasis on the scientific revival and ecological restoration of these freshwater
ecosystems. E.F.I asserts that caring for the environment is neither an option nor an obligation—it is simply
rational.
Their efforts span 18 states across India, including Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Jammu
& Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil
Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana. By engaging in both metropolitan areas such as Delhi, Mumbai,
Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and Kochi, as well as rural communities in these states,
E.F.I has fostered a nationwide initiative focused on environmental conservation.
Three W's of E.F.I
1. WATER
2. WILDLIFE
3. WASTE
The organization’s principal focus has been on adopting, scientifically reviving and ecologically restoring
freshwater lakes and ponds across the country. E.F.I has worked on 431 water bodies across 18 states in
the country since its inception in 2007.
E.F.I has been successful in cleaning and reviving nearly 75 water bodies in and around Chennai. This
includes the Madambakkam Lake, Vandalur Lake, Arasankazhani Lake, Karasangal Lake, Sholinganallur
Thamaraikeni Lake. Ponds at Mudichur, Perungalathur, Madhavaram, and Gerugambakkam.
E.F.I is also involved in the setting up of herbal biodiversity gardens at schools and special interest zones.
The idea behind the herbal gardens is to increase people's interest in green cover and live healthy with native
Indian herbs. E.F.I's "Clean for Olive Green" is a beach clean up project that is organised every year in the
months of December to May to keep Chennai's beaches clean for the nesting Sea Turtle Mothers. E.F.I is
active in Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Delhi, Srinagar and Thiruvananthapuram. The organisation is
known for cleaning the beach stretch between Veli and Vizhinjiam in Thiruvananthapuram part of
the Beach Habitat Restoration.
Ramanujar Pond Restoration in Kanchipuram. An ancient waterbody, located in front of the Sri Ramanujar
Sannadhi at Sevilimedu in Kancheepuram taluk, was revived by the Environmentalist Foundation of India
(E.F.I). The work coincided with the 1,000th birth anniversary of Sri Ramanuja.
➢ WATER SECURITY MISSION
In 2015, the Tamil Nadu government started a water security initiative. The project will concentrate on
cleaning and scientifically restoring 15 lakes in the Chennai area. The Environmentalist Foundation of
India is the executing NGO partner, while Chennai Metro Water serves as the nodal agency.
Madambakkam, Perumbakkam, Mudichur, Thiruverkadu, Keezhkattalai, Medavakkam, Adambakkam,
Arasankazhani, Madipakkam, Puzhithivakkam, and other lakes were among the fifteen lakes that were
selected. This is thought to be an attempt to preserve these natural ecosystems and raise Chennai's water
table.
➢ E.F.I’S PUBLIC AWARENESS WALL PAINTINGS
Part of its outreach efforts, E.F.I has teamed up with the Southern Railway, Chennai Metro Rail Corporation
and Greater Chennai Corporation to paint public walls with environment outreach information. Named
"Wall.E" the effort has spread to 8 cities in 2017.
➢ FOUNDING
E.F.I was established by Arun Krishnamurthy when he started the process of cleaning a pond in Mudichur
and a lake in Hyderabad. The organization's strategy to attract volunteers through orientation programs in
schools and colleges garnered support, resulting in many students signing up. E.F.I's team received backing
from individuals with similar values who participated as volunteers in their Sunday clean-up efforts.
