Class 8 – Mathematics Question Paper

Chapters: Rational Numbers; Linear Equations in One Variable; Squares & Square Roots;
Cubes & Cube Roots; Exponents & Powers; Data Handling; Introduction to Graphs

Time: 3 Hours Max Marks: 60

General Instructions
1. All questions are compulsory.

2. Use of calculator is not permitted.

3. Draw neat graphs with proper scale where required. Use graph paper for graph
questions.

Section A – Very Short Answer (1 × 8 = 8)

1. Write the additive inverse of -13/17.

2. Solve: x/3 = 7.

3. Find √121.

4. 512 is the cube of which natural number?

5. Evaluate: 5^0.

6. What is the probability of getting a tail on a single toss of a fair coin?

7. In which quadrant does the point (-3,4) lie?

8. Write any one rational number between 2/5 and 3/5.

Section B – Short Answer I (2 × 8 = 16)

9. Simplify: -3/4 + 5/8 - 7/16.

10. Write any two rational numbers between -1/2 and 1/3.

11. Solve: x/2 + 3 = 11.

12. The sum of two consecutive integers is 55. Find the integers.

13. Find the smallest number by which 180 must be multiplied to make it a perfect square.

14. Find the cube root of 3375.

15. Express 0.000072 in standard form (scientific notation).

16. The weekly pocket money (in ₹) of 6 students is: 40, 50, 50, 60, 70, 40. Find the mean.

Section C – Short Answer II (3 × 8 = 24)

17. Using a table for x=-2,-1,0,1,2, plot the graph of y=2x on graph paper. Also state whether
the graph passes through the origin.

18. Mark -5/6 and 1/3 on the number line. Find the rational number exactly midway
between them.

19. The perimeter of a rectangle is 68 cm. Its length is 5 cm more than twice its breadth.
Form and solve a linear equation to find the dimensions.

20. Find √3136 by the long division method.

21. Find the smallest number by which 1323 should be multiplied to obtain a perfect cube.
Hence, find the cube root of the resulting number.

22. Simplify and express using positive exponents only: (2^-3 × 5^2 × 10^3)/(5 × 10^-1).

23. The number of storybooks read by 11 students in a month is: 2, 1, 3, 0, 4, 2, 3, 1, 2, 5, 2.

Find the median and mode.

24. Simplify: [(-2/5 ÷ 3/10) × (-15/4)].

Section D – Long Answer (4 × 3 = 12)

25. Using properties of rational numbers, evaluate without direct multiplication: (-2/3)
(9/4+3/8)+(-2/3)(7/8). Clearly mention the property used.

26. The sum of three consecutive multiples of 7 is 147. Find the numbers. Also verify your
answer.

27. The number of bicycles sold by a shop in January–April is:

Month: Jan Feb Mar Apr

Shop A: 20 28 24 32
Shop B: 18 25 30 26

(i) Draw a double bar graph with a suitable scale to represent the data.
(ii) From the graph, find:
a) the month with the maximum difference in sales between the shops,
b) the total bicycles sold by Shop A in Jan–Apr.
Answers / Marking Scheme
1. 13/17

2. x = 21

3. 11

4. 8

5. 1

6. 1/2

7. Quadrant II

8. Example: 1/2

9. -3/4 + 5/8 - 7/16 = -1/16

10. Examples: -1/4, 0

11. x = 16

12. Integers = 27, 28

13. Multiply by 5

14. Cube root of 3375 = 15

15. 7.2 × 10^-5

16. Mean = 51.67

17. Straight line through origin, slope 2

18. Midpoint = -7/36

19. Breadth = 9 cm, Length = 23 cm

20. √3136 = 56

21. Multiply by 3; cube root = 11

22. 2^(-3)×5^2×10^3 / (5×10^-1) = 2^0 × 5^3 × 10^4 = 125000

23. Median = 2, Mode = 2

24. (-2/5 ÷ 3/10) × (-15/4) = 5/2

25. Using distributive property: = (-2/3)(9/4+3/8+7/8) = (-2/3)(2.75) = -11/6

26. 7×7=49, 7×8=56, 7×9=63 → numbers are 49,56,63

27. (i) Double bar graph.

(ii) a) February, b) Total = 104
