Subject: concern about the increasing number of road mishaps [max. 1 line or 7-9 words]

Respected Sir/Madam [Salutation – no comma]

I, XYZ, a responsible citizen of Pune, would like to bring your attention to the rising number
of road mishaps in my neighbourhood. The roads are becoming a death trap in recent years.
The root-cause of these collisions appears to be irresponsible and hasty driving. People
nowadays live in a mechanised world and are usually in a rush. The speed-barriers and
accident-prone-area-warnings are ignored. They are not concerned regarding their wellbeing
or the regulations of the road. Another factor contributing to these collisions is the growth in
the number of automobiles on the road. Today’s youth yearn for their own automobile. The
majority of risky driving is done by young people who are also reckless drivers.
I would like to request the authorities, through the prestigious columns of your publication, to
take appropriate stern action against lawbreakers. Through public awareness programmes,
make people aware about traffic rules, the significance of speed-barriers, and speed restrictions,
so that roads become a safe place for everyone who uses them.

Thanking you

Yours sincerely [No apostrophe (’) in Yours]

Lucknow, 11 July 20xx: The ‘Each One Teach One’ camp was held in our school during the
summer vacations. Children from neighbourhood slums of the age 6-8 years also participated
in the camp. Different and unique skills were taught by every student.
The camp commenced on 3 May 20XX in the presence of Ragunandhan, education minister of
India. The camp went on for 60 days and was a huge success, with the help of student volunteers
from class XI. Students of classes VI-X, taught foundational numeracy and literacy skills. A
special guest lecture was given by Malala Yousaf, a Nobel prize winner, on how a pen and a
teacher can change the whole world. Stationery and books were distributed to the slum kids.
Both oral and written approaches were undertaken. General knowledge quizzes were
conducted. The distribution of certificates to all the participants marked the end of the event.
The students and slum kids showed great contentment on attending the camp. They requested
for more such camps to be conducted in the future.

Answer:

Two Killed in Train Accident

16 March 20xx / Delhi By: ABC, Staff Correspondent
Two persons were killed when their car was hit by the KK Express at an unmanned level
crossing at Dabri Mor. They were rushed to a local hospital where they were declared brought
dead. The car driver was identified as Umesh (36) and the other passenger as Soham (39).
Expressing sorrow and shock at the accident, the State Transport Minister, stressed the need to
set up manned level crossings, which should be taken up by the Centre. According to
eyewitnesses, at around 11:15 am, the car was at the level crossing and stopped just before the
KK Express was to pass, but unfortunately, it was too close to the tracks. The car was thrown
around 20 feet from the level crossing. The area where the road crosses the railway tracks is
unmanned, and according to local residents, this is the second time within one year that a car
has been hit by a train. An enquiry has been ordered into the accident.

ARTICLE
Question: In many parts of our country girls are still discouraged from going to school.
Consequently, a sizable section of the population is deprived of education. Schemes like
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, CBSE scholarship to the single girl child and the Government’s
policy of giving free education to girls have come as a boon to our society. Write an
article in 150-200 words on the education of the girl child in the country.

Answer:
Education Of The Girl
Child In The Country
(NOTE: if the title is lengthy make it in 2 lines but Centre aligned)
Education of girls has been a high priority with the Government of India. In the new
millennium, India has consolidated its earlier educational reforms with increased resources
and stronger policy commitments for achieving elementary education, particularly for girls.
Reaching out to the girl child is primary to the efforts to universalise elementary education.
‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan’ or ‘Education For All’ programme recognizes that ensuring the
education of the girl child requires changes not only in the education system but also in
society’s norms and attitudes.
A two-pronged gender strategy has hence been adopted to make the educational system
responsive to the needs of the girls through targeted interventions which serve as a pull-factor
to enhance access and retention of girls in schools on the one hand and generate community
demand for girls’ education through training and mobilisation on the other hand. The CBSE
has also come up with the novel scheme of providing free education from the sixth standard
onwards to the single girl child. The need of the times is that the government should further
improve the educational infrastructure and make it more accessible and meaningful for the
girl child.

Points to Remember:
• IT IS OPINION-BASED
• Give a catchy title.
• Begin with a striking opening sentence which addresses the readers and gets them
interested in the topic.
• Present a strong argument for your ideas supporting it with evidence or elaboration.
• Use linking devices (‘however’, ‘therefore’, ‘although’, ‘even though’, ‘in order to’)
to make the composition appear a whole.
• Introduce a new point at the beginning of each paragraph that follows to strengthen
your ideas.
• Develop your ideas as much as you can to make them interesting and substantial.
• Conclude with your strongest point.
• Use passive voice, humour, emotive language, rhetorical questions to provide a
specific effect.
