Word Processing notes

1. Introduction to Word Processing


Definition: Word processing is the use of computer software to create, edit, format, store,
and print text-based documents such as letters, reports, memos, and books.

Examples: MS Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, WPS Writer.

Importance: Saves time, provides editing and formatting flexibility, enhances presentation,
allows storage and sharing.

2. Functional Concepts of Word Processing


Creating documents: Blank or template.

Editing: Insert, delete, rearrange text.

Formatting: Change font, alignment, spacing.

Tables and Graphics: Insert tables, pictures, charts.

Utilities: Spell check, grammar check, find & replace.

Printing and Saving: Store in .docx/.pdf, send to printer.

3. Document Creation and Manipulation


Steps: Open → Blank → Type → Save → Edit.

Manipulation Skills: Copy, cut, paste, move text, insert page breaks, undo/redo.

4. Document Editing
Basic Editing: Insert/delete characters or words.

Advanced Tools: Spell checker, grammar checker, thesaurus, track changes, comments.

5. Document Formatting
Text Formatting: Font style, size, effects.

Paragraph Formatting: Alignment, spacing, bullets/numbering.

Page Formatting: Margins, orientation, headers/footers, numbering.


6. Tables, Charts, and Graphics
Tables: Insert → Table, used for organizing data.

Charts: Insert → Chart (bar, line, pie).

Graphics: Insert → Picture/Shape/SmartArt.

7. Word Processing Utilities


Spell & Grammar Check, Find & Replace, Mail Merge, Track Changes, Templates.

8. File Management in Word Processing


Saving: Save vs Save As.

Formats: .docx, .pdf, .rtf, .txt.

Organizing: Folders/subfolders.

Security: Password protection, restricted editing.

9. Printing and Sharing Documents


Print Setup: Printer, page range, copies.

Print Preview: Check layout before printing.

Sharing: Email, cloud storage, export to PDF.

10. Practical Assignments (CBET Oriented)


1. Create a letter using MS Word with bold headings and page numbers.

2. Design a student attendance table (5 columns, 10 rows).

3. Insert a logo and wrap text around it.

4. Use Find & Replace to replace 'school' with 'college'.

5. Create a mail merge document for 5 recipients.


11. Assessment Criteria (CBET)
Ability to create and edit documents.

Apply formatting to text and pages.

Insert/manipulate tables, images, charts.

Use utilities (spell check, mail merge).

Save, secure, and share documents.
