Make A KPG Programming Cable
Make A KPG Programming Cable

KPG-8 and KPG-22 are basically the same beast. The only difference between them is that the -22
power from the PC and the -8 requires an independent power supply, otherwise
they are interchangeable
Many of the radios that use the KPG-8 / KPG-22 can also be cloned from another one.
generally same model, radio using a cloning cable E30-3410-05.
This advantage is externally powered, it is technically a KPG-8. This initiative was designed
for Kenwood radios, but works on a good number of other brands that I am bringing to
create, see the bottom of the page for a list of (supposedly) radios
compatible.

Making Up
I have drawn a diagram that I found with color for the ease of circuit tracing together.
with a slight modification.
the original I had was for the KPG-22 and showed the energy supplied by the PC through the
CTS and RTS lines in the serial port, but some USB to serial adapters and equipment cannot.
power the circuit this way, so I have adapted for external power, a type of
a 9V PP3 battery would be fine or connecting it to a 13.8V DC supply. This has 'converted' into
a KPG-8!
For construction, strip board can be used, the dead bug method, or even produce your own.
Own PCB, if you want. You just have to follow the diagram. Component design is not
really critical for this circuit, although beginners (and the more experienced) can
have to check polarity/orientation of the double components.
Once done, check the welding for the connections and jumper cables.
street mustaches. If its construction is small enough to fit on the cover of the
9-pin D power outlet, if not a small box with short connection cables to the outlet
9 pins will work just as well.
November 2010 update John, ZS6JON puts me in touch with this note (I don't know what it
that the lead programming he did, but the 3 Kenwood at this site at the time were
basically the same with different radio plugs installed):
Hello Brian.
Greetings from South Africa.
My Kenwood programmer packed up and I was looking online and was pleasantly surprised.
finding your article. Very easy to read and clear. Well done.
If I may ask you a question about the article.
I see that you have R1 and R2 listed in the components list, but not in the diagram.
(Yes, they remain from the powered PC design, I forgot to remove them from the parts list, done.
now
I built it according to the diagram and the tests were unsuccessful. I shortened the cable to the serial port with
still unsuccessful. When my previous programmer was working, the radio used to go to 'PC' on the screen.
Now I understand nothing yet.
Have I missed something? Maybe you have some advice on where to look.
Well, after comparing the notes I had with a previously made device and the
I suggested to him that maybe the CTS and RTS pins in the serial connector need to be bridged.
together. John tried this and there is no joy, and then he realized that some other pins
they were also occupied by a bridge in their device of the dead, in their own words:
This is what I did.
RTS (pin 7) and CTS (pin 8) are connected to each other.
DTR (Terminal 4) and DSR (pin 6) are connected to each other.
After I did this, everything worked very well.
I have updated the diagram to reflect this modification. Thanks, Juan.
Using the KPG-22 with its radio
To use the interface with your radio, you will need the software corresponding to your radio. This

other sources, which offer various characteristics. Follow the instructions in your instructions.
