HOW TO DO COMPARATIVE THEOLOGY
Introduction
Francis X. Clooney, S.J., and Klaus von Stosch
The fifteen essays collected in How to Do Comparative Theology are the
fruits of an August 2014 conference in Paderborn, Germany, which it-
self was part of a larger conversation involving senior and junior schol-
ars in the field over the five years before that. The conference brought
together scholars in the field of comparative theology in the United States
and Europe to share their work in this emerging field, and to reflect to-
gether on the nature and best methods current today by listening to how
each of us actually does it.
Comparative theology is, after all, a challenging endeavor: From the
perspective of the authors of this volume, it is theology, which may be
briefly described as faith seeking understanding, grounded in commu-
nity, cognizant of claims regarding truth, and open to the implications
of study for spiritual advancement and practice; and it is comparative,
familiar with and respectful of the best work in comparative studies of
religion today, yet also committed to learning from both outside and
within one’s own community in a way that remains theologically sensi-
tive and conducive to mutual transformation in study. Regardless of how
this balance is achieved, however, in convening the Paderborn confer-
ence we also realized that the question of “Why?” implicit in the “How?”
remains a pressing one. Accordingly, it is impor tant to profile more
clearly the intellectual and practical benefits of the field for individuals,
for the academy, and for religious communities themselves. Methods,
purposes, and results are intertwined.
The 2014 conference was motivated also by our recognition that while
exciting comparative theological work is being done in both North
America and Europe, there have been only a few links connecting these
groups of scholars. This gap is remedied, in part, by our current work

together, culminating thus far in How We Do Comparative Theology. The
conference was distinctive also in offering younger scholars from both
continents—those with completed doctoral degrees and those still in
studies—the opportunity to share their work, take an active role in in-
terrogating the field as it stands today, and help shape its future.
In the aftermath of the conference, excited by the conversations we
had, and yet also alert to the challenges that became all the more appar-
ent in Paderborn, we decided it would be useful—for ourselves and poten-
tial readers—to gather in a single volume the key presentations from the
conference so as to record and highlight the issues before the field today.
Hence this volume, which we are delighted to have appear in Fordham
University Press’s Comparative Theology: Thinking Across Traditions
series. Given the diversity in the field and in our conference—a part of
which is manifest in these essays—early on we decided to focus on
method, how we—this group of interested theologians, so diverse among
ourselves—each has decided to do comparative work, with which priori-
ties and ends in mind. By advancing the project of developing common
criteria in comparative theology in light of our various approaches, we
thereby hope to further refine its character as an academic discipline.
The common criteria recurring across these essays—including faith-
and tradition-groundedness, responsibility with respect to doctrinal im-
plications, epistemic humility in one’s encounter with the other, patience
with and respect for the particulars, attentiveness to experiential and
practical outcomes—should not be understood as an exclusive or easily
coded set which we all share entirely and which might be easily imple-
mented by readers. These criteria stand rather as a group of family
resemblances—such as Ludwig Wittgenstein so famously described—
which bring together our different approaches to comparative theology.
Some of these resemblances have to do with our shared ways of relating
the theologies of different traditions and with our concern to attend to
the praxis of religious believers, including how they do (or might) re-
spond to our modes of study. Other resemblances resonate include our
common concern to take experience seriously, foster pastoral relevance,
and keep up with the religious and spiritual sentiments of younger gen-
erations, even among our contributors, and with emerging trends in the
understanding and practice of religion. Many, if not all, of our con-
tributors are confident that even in pursuing very particular case studies,
the expected results still shed light on larger issues of wider interest.
And so on.

All our authors share a commitment to comparative work, and all are
concerned that our work remain clearly and solidly theological. Yet we
differ among ourselves in how we go about this. We also differ among
ourselves in other ways: gender (seven women, eight men), age (a span
of more than forty years from the oldest to the youngest), religious
background and commitment (Jewish and Christian of various denom-
inations), Muslim, and some with strong Buddhist and Hindu affinities),
place of residence and academic work (continental Eu rope, the United
Kingdom, the United States), and expertise in varying traditions
(Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism). While we can cer-
tainly imagine greater diversity (involving, for instance, East Asian cultures
and religions and African cultures and religions), we are content that this
set of fifteen authors provides a rich panorama for how comparative the-
ology can be thought about and practiced today.
It will be evident to the reader, then, that differences in approach and
explanation remain, even if all the essays are the fruits of an increasingly
shared conversation. It would have been very difficult to compose a fi-
nalized list of attributes necessary to comparative theology. In the end,
however, our tentativeness is not a weakness but a rather sensible vote of
confidence in the field, as vital and growing even or especially in areas
lacking specificity. If we interpret “comparative theology” in accord with
Wittgenstein’s concept of family resemblances, we can see that it is nei-
ther necessary nor possible to consolidate a single and final list of com-
ponents essential to comparative theological method.
The volume thus fills a niche in a growing field that in recent years
has seen a number of collections of essays that describe and exemplify
the field: The New Comparative Theology: Interreligious Insights from the
Next Generation, edited by Francis X. Clooney, S.J. (Continuum Publish-
ing, 2010); Comparative Theology in Europe, edited by John H. Berthrong
and Francis X. Clooney (MDPI Publishing, 2014); Teaching Comparative
Theology in the Millennial Classroom: Hybrid Identities, Negotiated
Boundaries, edited by Mara Brecht and Reid Locklin (Routledge Re-
search in Religion and Education, 2015); Comparative Theology: Insights
for Systematic Theological Reflection, edited by Michelle Voss Roberts
(Fordham University Press, 2016); and many of the essays in the Beiträge
zur Komparativen Theologie series edited by Klaus von Stosch (Ferdinand
Schöningh, 2011–16). How We Do Comparative Theology aptly complements
those volumes, while remaining distinctive in highlighting issues of
method in comparative work.

The volume divided naturally into three parts that aid us in thinking
about each essay in proximity to those it more closely resembles: “Doing
Comparative Theology—As Theology,” “Comparative Theology Is What
Comparative Theology Does,” and “Recognizing Comparative Theology
by Its Fruits.” The three parts of the volume mark three moments, even
graded steps, in the project of unfolding the significance of this field.
Doing Comparative Theology—as Theology
The essays in Part I are concerned particularly with the relationship be-
tween the work of comparative theology and doctrinal theology. The
goal here is to be honest about the implications of seeing comparative
theology as theology, to further the conversation about interfaith learn-
ing as relevant and responsible to doctrinal theology, and thereby also
to ensure that comparative theology is taken seriously by mainstream,
non-comparative theologians.
In Chapter 1, “The Problem of Choice in Comparative Theology,”
Catherine Cornille lays out the challenges inherent in developing a uni-
fied focus and method for comparative theology. While the possibilities
for comparison between religions are almost unlimited, the approaches
to the discipline range along a continuum from explicitly confessional
to what she calls meta-confessional. In this open situation, some moder-
ate constraints are of great value. Focusing primarily on the confessional
grounding of the discipline, Cornille develops a typology of the differ-
ent ways in which the exercise of comparative theology may lead to new
theological insight and growth. She proposes addressing the problem of
choice and fragmentation in the field by focusing on certain pressing
theological questions or problems within one’s religion and exploring
how another religion might shed light on those problems. She points also
to the continued importance of the theology of religions as integral to
comparative theology.
In Chapter 2, “Reflecting on Approaches to Jesus in the Qur’ān from
the Perspective of Comparative Theology,” Klaus von Stosch illustrates
very concretely what Cornille is suggesting. He urges us to do compara-
tive theology in a way that is oriented to problems, rather than proceed-
ing just by case studies. The extended example he introduces, though
interest ing as exemplifying a certain kind of comparative work, is
primarily aimed at making a constructive contribution to Christian
Christology with the help of the Qur’ān, by working through one of the

fundamental problems in Muslim-Christian understanding: the mean-
ing of Christ. von Stosch aims to take the Islamic appreciation of Jesus
of Nazareth as seriously as possible, to face the problems arising as di-
rectly as possible, and, in the end, to ask whether or not that Islamic ap-
preciation can be integrated into Christian theology without abandoning
Christian claims of truth. For this purpose, von Stosch seeks to clear the
historical ground so as to better understand influences and differences
pertinent to Islam in its earliest eras, and then to do theology construc-
tively with the specific of the original and contemporary situations in
mind. It is this constructive work that he sees as the final purpose of
comparative theology. This Christian comparative theology, at its best,
seeks to develop its insights in a dialogical and fruitful way, as the
Christian author seeks to involve Muslim colleagues in every step of his
reflections. Yet too, a third party situated outside the dialogue—in this
case, the Middle Eastern Studies scholar Angelika Neuwirth—is drawn
into the conversation in order to interrogate further the tentative results
of the dialogue. Thus, von Stosch invites us to see how comparative
theology is to be done when it seeks to develop a theological position
through dialogue with theologians from other religions.
In Chapter 3, “The Moment of Truth: Comparative and Dogmatic
Theology,” Aaron Langenfeld further generalizes the point made by Cor-
nille and von Stosch. He reflects on how the discipline of comparative
theology should be related to the normative grounds for religious truth
claims to which theology as a whole is committed. Confirming a funda-
mental characteristic of comparative theology, he proposes that this
challenge cannot be met if the question of truth is neglected; rather, it
must be preserved as the central focus in concrete comparative work. To
justify this proposition, in his Christian-Muslim work on salvation Lan-
genfeld elaborates a fundamental insight regarding the Muslim critique
of Christian anthropology, particularly regarding the concept of origi-
nal sin, which is presumed in the Christian understanding of salvation
and redemption. The evident differences are then elaborated in four
phases common to comparative theological reflection and dogmatic
theological reflection: the development of an original theological concept,
an internal irritant or external provocation urging us to deconstruct the
presumed concept, a grappling with the irritant or provocation, and a re-
construction of the original concept, considering the newly gained in-
sights. Understood in this way, Langenfeld suggests, we can see more easily
how comparative theology really does proceed like other substantive
