START VALVE
This task gives the instructions to manually open the starter air-control valve to supply air to the starter while
the cowls and thrust reverser doors are closed.
APU must be used to supply the pneumatic pressure to the engine starter or damage to engine hardware coul
d occur during pre-start motoring.
Ground start cart or cross bleed can be used if the engine has been shut down for a minimum of 12 hours bef
ore you try to start it.

(1) During the engine start procedure, obey all the engine safety precautions Ref. AMM TASK 71-0
0-00-869-803.
(2) APU must be used to supply the pneumatic pressure to the engine starter if the engine has bee
n shut down for less than 12 hours.
(3) An engine cross bleed or a ground start cart can be used if the engine has been shut down for
a minimum of 12 hours. Once there is engine light off (N2>35%), the 12 hours shut down perio
d starts again.

A. Check of the Starter Air Control-Valve System
(1) Use the maintenance interphone jack or any other means of communication between cockpit
and ground and make sure that you can communicate with the cockpit crew.
(2) Find the DRIVE 3/8 IN - SQUARE (manual override drive) (3) of the starter air control-valve (2) t
hrough the access hole (1).
(3) Make sure that the valve is in the closed position.
NOTE: The valve is spring-loaded to the closed position. Rotate the square drive clockwise
to CLOSE if required.
(4) Engine start:
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT WHEN THE ENGINES OPERATE ON THE GROUND:
- NO PERSONS GO WHERE THE AIRCRAFT CAN CAUSE THEM INJURY
OR CAN KILL THEM
- NO OBJECTS STAY WHERE THE ENGINES CAN BLOW THEM AWAY OR
WHERE THEY CAN BE PULLED INTO THE ENGINES BY SUCTION.
CAUTION: DO NOT OPERATE THE MANUAL HANDLE OF THE PNEUMATIC STARTER VAL
VE IF THE STARTER SYSTEM IS NOT PRESSURIZED. IF YOU DO, DAMAGE TO
THE PNEUMATIC STARTER VALVE CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: DO NOT OVER-TORQUE THE MANUAL OVERRIDE OF THE STARTER AIR VALV
E. IF YOU DO, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE STARTER AIR VALVE.
(a) Tell the cockpit crew that you are ready for the engine start.
(5) When directed by the cockpit crew, turn the manual override counterclockwise to the OPEN po
sition and hold it open with approximately to between 80 and 120 lbf.in (0.90 and 1.36 m.daN)
of TORQUE.
NOTE: Do not use more than 200 lbf.in (2.26 m.daN) of TORQUE to hold the valve open.
NOTE: Keep the valve open until the cockpit crew tells you to release and close the valve.
(6) When directed by the cockpit crew, turn the valve clockwise to the CLOSED position.
NOTE: Keep the valve closed until the cockpit crew tells you to release the valve.
(7) Tell the cockpit crew to make sure that on the ECAM WD, the warning message ENG 1(2) STAR
T VALVE FAULT/START VALVE NOT CLOSED does not come into view.

(2) Tell the cockpit crew that the valve is closed and that you will now leave the area.
(3) Disconnect the interphone from the intake cowl or any other means of communication betwee
n cockpit and ground and go away from the engine.
(4) Signal to the cockpit crew that you are away from the aircraft.
