1. Research Question (Criterion B)
How does the solubility of water affect the weight and mass of potato strips ?
2. Hypothesis (Criterion B)
I think that when the potato strips are placed in:
Low concentration solution → they will gain mass because there is more water which
the potato will absorb.
High concentration solution → they will not gain mass because the solution is diluted
with sugars.
At a certain concentration (isotonic point) → they will will not absorb anything.
3. Variables (Criterion B)
Independent variable (I change): Water, Sucrose
Dependent variable (I measure): Mass of Potato
Controlled variables (I keep the same):
1. The Beaker
2. The Temperature
3. The length of strips
4. Method (Criterion B) – in your own words
Write short steps:
1. Cut…
2. Weigh…
3. Put in solution…
Ms. Diana Mario
4. Wait…
5. Blot…
6. Weigh again…
5. Data Collection (Criterion C)
Concentration Initial Mass (g) % Change in
Final Mass (g) Mass Change (g)
(%) Mass
1.56 1.68 0.12g 1.56
0% (water)
1.42 1.48 0.6g 1.42
5%
1.48 1.52 0.4g 1.48
10%
1.48 1.50 0.2g 1.48
20%
Formula:
% Change = (Final − Initial ÷ Initial) × 100
6. Graph (Criterion C)
📊 Draw a line graph of % change in mass (y-axis) against concentration (x-axis).
Label axes with units.
Plot all points carefully.
Draw a smooth curve or best-fit line.
7. Analysis & Conclusion (Criterion C)
What happened in water (0%)? __________________________________________
What happened in the highest concentration? ____________________________
Where did the line cross 0%? (This is the isotonic point) ________________
Why do the strips gain or lose mass? ___________________________________

8. Evaluation (Criterion C)
Were your results similar for all repeats? Yes / No
Any odd results? _________________________

9. ATL Skills You Practiced
Thinking: I used a graph to show a trend and explain osmosis.
Research: I measured carefully and recorded my results in a table.
Communication: I wrote a clear conclusion with scientific words.
Self-management: I managed my time and kept my samples organized.
