Place the ECG machine close to the
6 patient’s bed,
and plug the power cord into the wall
outlet.
If the bed is adjustable, raise it to a
7 comfortable working
height, usually elbow height of the
caregiver
Have the patient lie supine in the
8 center of the bed
with the arms at the sides. Raise the
head of the bed
if necessary to promote comfort.
Select flat, fleshy areas on which to
9 place the electrodes.
Avoid muscular and bony areas.
If an area is excessively hairy, clip the
10 hair. Do not
shave hair. Clean excess oil or other
substances from
the skin with soap and water and dry
it completely.
Apply the limb lead electrodes.
11 Position the disposable
electrodes on the legs with the lead
connection
pointing superiorly.
Connect the limb lead wires to the
12 electrodes. Make sure
the metal parts of the electrodes are
clean and bright.
Expose the patient’s chest. Apply the
13 precordial
lead electrodes. The brown or V1 to
V6 leads
are applied to the chest.
Connect the precordial lead wires to
14 the electrodes.
Make sure the metal parts of the
electrodes
are clean and bright.

After the application of all the leads,


15 make sure
the paper-speed selector is set to the
standard
25 m/second and that the machine is
set to full voltage.
If necessary, enter the appropriate
16 patient
identification data into the machine.
Ask the patient to relax and breathe
17 normally.
Instruct the patient to lie still and not
to talk
while you record the ECG.
Press the AUTO button. Observe the
18 tracing quality.
The machine will record all 12 leads
automatically,
recording 3 consecutive leads
simultaneously.
When the machine finishes recording
19 the 12-lead ECG,
remove the electrodes and clean the
patient’s skin,
After disconnecting the lead wires
20 from the electrodes,
dispose all of the electrodes. Return
the patient to a
comfortable position.
Document significant assessment
21 findings, the date
and time that the ECG was obtained,
and the patient’s
response to the procedure.
