The United States is a large country, so it experiences a wide range of extreme weather conditions
throughout the year. In the summer, the southern states often face powerful hurricanes. These storms bring heavy
rain, strong winds, and flooding, which can damage homes and roads. Hurricanes can also cause power outages,
leaving people without electricity for days. In the central part of the country, known as "Tornado Alley," tornadoes
are common during spring and early summer. These dangerous windstorms form quickly and can destroy houses,
trees, and cars in just a few minutes. People living in this area are always alert and often have shelters to stay
safe.

In winter, the northern states experience snowstorms. These storms bring freezing temperatures, strong
winds, and heavy snowfall, making it difficult to drive or even walk outside. Snowstorms can also cause schools
and offices to close. On the other hand, the western states, like California, often face long periods without rain,
which leads to droughts. Droughts cause water shortages and increase the risk of wildfires, especially during the
hot, dry months.

Despite these challenges, people in the United States prepare for extreme weather by using warning
systems, stocking up on supplies, and making emergency plans to stay safe.

3 . What problem do snowstorms cause in the northern states? 4. How do people in the United States prepare for extreme weather?
a. Flooding and power outages a. By using warning systems and making emergency plans
b. Drought and wildfires b. By ignoring the weather conditions
c. Freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall c. By leaving the country during storms

5. When are tornadoes most common in "Tornado Alley"?

a. Winter and autumn.
b. Spring and early summer
c. Late summer and autumn

6. Write a reply to your friend in approximately 5 lines. Include: a greeting and a supportive opening sentence; at least
two pieces of helpful advice; and a closing sentence offering further support.

Subject: Feeling Stressed About School

Hi [_____________________]

I hope you're doing well. I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed lately with school and all the upcoming tests. There’s just so much to
study, and I’m not sure how to manage everything. I know I should probably be more organized, but it's hard to stay on top of it all.
No matter how much I study, I still feel unprepared, and it’s starting to affect my sleep. Do you have any tips or advice on how to
handle the stress and keep up with everything? I’d really appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks so much,
Miranda
