First Term Examination 2025-26

Subject – Physics (Class XII)

Maximum Marks: 70
Time: 3 Hours

General Instructions:
1. All questions are compulsory.

2. There is no overall choice. However, internal choice has been provided in some questions.

3. Use of a calculator is not permitted.

4. Assume data wherever necessary and state it clearly.

Section – A (1 mark each)

1. Define electric flux.

2. What is the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor filled completely with a dielectric of
dielectric constant K?

3. Draw the energy band diagram for a conductor.

4. A current of 3 A flows through a conductor for 2 s. Find the number of electrons that flow.

5. Name the part of the electromagnetic spectrum which is used in:

(a) Optical fibres
(b) Satellite communication

Section – B (2 marks each)

6. Define mobility of an electron in a conductor. Write its SI unit.

7. A cell of emf 2 V and internal resistance 0.1 Ω is connected to a resistance of 3.9 Ω.

Calculate the current in the circuit.

8. Define drift velocity. Write its relation with relaxation time.

9. State Gauss’s law in electrostatics.

10. A dipole of dipole moment 2 × 10⁻³ C·m is placed in a uniform electric field of 10⁵ N/C
making an angle of 60°. Calculate the torque acting on it.

11. State and explain Kirchhoff’s second law.

12. Define:
(a) Depletion region in a p–n junction
(b) Potential barrier

Section – C (3 marks each)

13. Derive the expression for the energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor.

14. State the principle of a potentiometer. Explain how it can be used to compare the emf of
two cells.

15. A carbon resistor has coloured bands: Red, Violet, Yellow, and Gold. Find its resistance
value with tolerance.

16. Derive the expression for electric field due to a uniformly charged infinite plane sheet
using Gauss’s law.

17. State and derive Ohm’s law in vector form.

18. Write three differences between conductors, semiconductors, and insulators on the
basis of energy bands.

19. Explain the function of the following in a transistor amplifier:

(a) Emitter
(b) Base
(c) Collector

Section – D (5 marks each)

20. Derive an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor with a dielectric
medium between the plates.

21. (a) State and explain Coulomb’s law in vector form.

(b) Two point charges q₁ = +3 µC and q₂ = −3 µC are placed 4 cm apart in vacuum. Find the
force between them.

22. Draw a labelled circuit diagram of a metre bridge and explain the procedure to
determine unknown resistance using it.

23. Derive an expression for the electric field on the axis of a dipole at a point far away from
the dipole.

24. (a) Explain the characteristics of a p–n junction diode in forward and reverse bias.
(b) Write two applications of a Zener diode.

25. Explain the construction and working of a cyclotron with neat diagram.
