Motivation

Ask learners to answer the following questions:

a. Who among you have encountered solving a word problem in

Mathematics?
b. What did you do to solve it?
c. What are the steps did you use in solving a word problem?

B. Lesson Proper (4As + E Approach)

1. ACTIVITY

Read, analyze, and solve the given problem.

Activity 1:
During weekends, Jomar helps his mother to sell fruits in the market.
On Saturday, he sold 275 kg of mangoes. On Sunday, he sold 350 kg of
rambutan. If those are the weekly average sales, how many kilograms of fruits
were sold in a month?

2
Activity 2:

Jeepney fare costs Php13.00 for the first 4 kilometers and additional
Php 2.00 for each succeeding kilometer. How much will Leo pay for his 7
kilometers trip?

Instruction:
a. Read, and analyze the word problem carefully.
b. Find out what are asked.
c. Identify the given facts/information needed to solve the problem.
d. Determine the first operation to be used.
e. Form the first mathematical sentence.
f. Determine the hidden questions.
g. Determine the second operation to be used to solve the problem.
h. Use the given facts and the operations to be used to form a number
sentence.
i. Write down the number sentences.
j. Solve for the number sentence.
k. Check if your answer is correct.

2. ANALYSIS

1. What were asked in the problem?

2. What were the given facts or information needed to solve the
problem.
3. What mathematical operation did you apply?
4. What were the hidden questions?
5. What were the number sentences?
6. What are the steps in solving the problem?
7. What is the answer to the problem?
8. How did you check the answer to the problem if it is correct?

3. ABSTRACTION
How did you solve the given problem?
What are the steps in solving multi-steps word problem?
Ask the learners to observe the steps in solving the word problems.
Problem A
1. Read and analyze the word problem.

a. What is asked in the problem?

b. How many kilograms of fruits were sold?
c. What is the hidden question?
d. How many kilograms of fruits were sold in a month?
e. How many kilograms of rambutan did Jomar sell in a month?
f. What are the given facts?

275 kg of mangoes sold on Saturday

and 350 kg of rambutan sold on Sunday.

3
1. Plan
Operation: Multiplication and Addition

Number Sentence ( 275 x 4) + ( 350 x4) = n

3. Solve

275 x 4 = 1100
350 x 4 = 1400

1100 + 1400 =2500

Jomar sold 2500 kg of fruits in a month.

If you were Jomar, would you like to help your mother? Why?
What specific skills of yours will be improved if you engage yourself in an
activity like selling fruits?

Problem B
2. Read and analyze the word problem.
a. What is asked in the problem?
b. How much will Leo pay for his trip?
c. What is the hidden question?
d. How much will be the cost for the next additional kilometer?
e. What are the given facts?
7 km trip,
Php8.50 for the first 4 km,
Php1.50 for each of the additional kilometer
3. Plan

Operation: Subtraction ,Multiplication ,Addition

Number Sentence:
7 km – 4 km= n
3 km x Php1.50= n

[Link]

Step1: 7 km – 4 km= 3 km

Step2: Php1.50 x 3= Php4.50

Step3: Php8.50 + Php4.50 = Php13.00

4. Check

Leo will pay Php13.00 for his 7 km trip.

4
To solve multistep problems involving multiplication addition or
subtraction you need to remember these four steps namely:

1. Read and understand

What is asked in the problem?
What is the hidden question?
What are the given facts?

2. Plan
What operation/s are we going to use?
What is the mathematical sentence or equation?

3. Solve
Perform the equation.

4. Check
Look back if your answer is correct or not.
