credited to Larry McCrea, who some fourteen years ago when I was a master’s
student at Cornell University asked me if there was a Sinhala Ramayana. This

Note on Translation and Transliteration
Throughout this book I follow the common transliteration system for Sinhala,
Pali, and Sanskrit. Vowels marked with a macron are long (ā, ī, ū, ē, ō), and
retroflex consonants are indicated with a dot below (ṭ, ḍ, ṇ). The Sinhala
umlaut appears in short form as ä and long form as ǟ. The prenasalized
consonants are written as ňd, ňḍ, ňg, and m̆b. I have translated Tamil words
following the scheme used by the Madras Tamil Lexicon (1924–1936) and the
Romanization system of Tamil of the Library of Congress. Plural forms of
foreign language terms are rendered by the unitalicized suffix “s.” I have ren-
dered proper names, place names, and Sanskrit terms which commonly ap-
pear in English without diacritics, except in cases of proper names for which
there are few or no published English language references. I refer to the story
of the Ramayana without diacritics to avoid giving the impression that I use
the term in specific reference to the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa or any other posited
ur-text. For the sake of consistency, I render Sanskrit yakṣa (which appears
with various spellings in Sinhala) simply as “Yaksha,” except when refer-
ring to or quoting from Pali texts, where I use Pali “Yakkha.” Unattributed
translations throughout are my own.

1.1 “WE BELONG TO THE YAKSHA CLAN!”
On December 3, 2018, at a packed outdoor rally in Colombo supporting
an immediate presidential referendum, actress Anusha Damayanthi was
greeted by thunderous applause when she addressed the crowd declaring,
“we may have been tamed by the preaching of the Buddha, but we still be-
long to the Yaksha clan!”1 Api yakku bolavu was evidently a recognizable
shibboleth for the audience there to support Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka’s
president from 2005 to 2015 (currently Prime Minister), and his brother
Gotabaya, former Defense Secretary and now the nation’s elected president.
“Yakku” is the Sinhala plural equivalent of Sanskrit yakṣa, a ferocious, semi-
divine class of mythological beings famous in Indian literature, named in Sri
Lanka’s Pali chronicles as the original, pre-human inhabitants of the island.
Since the conclusion of Sri Lanka’s civil war in 2009, the notion that Sinhala
Buddhists are themselves descended from the ancient Yakshas has come
into ascendency in public consciousness, closely associated with the prop-
osition that Ravana—the demon-king antagonist of the famed Hindu epic,
the Ramayana—was himself a real historical person, the king of the “Yaksha
tribe.”
Ravana has emerged as a cultural hero of the victorious Sinhala people in
books, newspapers, television programs, and online forums, popularized by
a motley assortment of politicians, Buddhist monks, tourism promoters, and
amateur and professional historians. References to Ravana’s kingdom have
found their way into popular Sinhala music, secondary school textbooks,
and official government publications. A model of the king’s aerial chariot (his
“flying mechanical peacock”) now hangs in the Sri Lankan Airforce Museum
in Ratmalana. Shrines to Ravana have popped up at prominent Buddhist
temples. The Sri Lankan Ministry of Tourism now actively promotes its
“Ramayana Trail,” a circuit of some fifty locations throughout the island

each with some putative connection to the “historical Ramayana.” In June
2019, Sri Lanka launched its first research satellite into low orbit around the
earth—the “Ravana One.”
This book explores the conditions of possibility for this curious reworking
of the mythological origins of the Sinhala Buddhist people, beginning with
a study of the transmission of written and oral versions of the Ramayana in
Sri Lanka from the fourteenth century. I go on to trace impressions of the
Ramayana in late nineteenth and twentieth century Sri Lankan literary fic-
tion, stage drama, and film, and conclude with an examination of the char-
acter of Ravana and the aesthetics of his “Yaksha tribe” as they have evolved
on online forums including Facebook, YouTube, and dedicated blog sites.
Throughout, I trace historical continuity in representations of Ravana as a
symbol of Lankan political sovereignty, in the destruction of Ravana’s ancient
kingdom as a metaphor for colonial loss and neo-colonial exploitation, and
in a uniquely sympathetic view of Ravana’s character, which I argue was orig-
inally a Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu innovation, adopted by Sinhala Buddhists in
the Kandyan period.
There is much to be said regarding the government victory over the
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) as a catalyst for the twenty-first-cen-
tury Ravana revival, one which inaugurated a quest for a grander, autochtho-
nous vision of the origins of the Sinhala Buddhist people.2 Many readers will
be sensitive to the irony of the Sinhala appropriation of Ravana as a cultural
hero in light of the fact that the Rakshasa king served as an emblem for the
Dravidian independence movement of nearly a century ago in South India,
a political discourse which influenced the Tamil separatist movement in Sri
Lanka. There are today additional aspects of the Sinhala Ravana phenom-
enon familiar from other national contexts—we find, for example, in both
India and Sri Lanka, visions of a prelapsarian distant past, ruled by indis-
putably Dharmic kings, possessed of fantastic technological innovations, all
reconstructed for the modern reader within an aesthetic that foregrounds
martial and vitalist imagery. In this capacity, the Sinhala Ravana imaginary
reproduces in Sri Lanka what Banu Subramaniam identifies as being at the
at the heart of Narendra Modi’s brand of contemporary Hindu nationalism,
a magnificent past “where science, technology, and philosophy thrived,”
melding “science and religion, the ancient and the modern” within “a vision
of India as an ‘archaic modernity’.”3
The intention of this book however is not to rehearse Sri Lankan instances
of phenomena already documented elsewhere in South Asia, nor to reduce

Sri Lanka to a mere token of a general type. Instead, I seek to explain what
is unique to the Sri Lankan case, and what about it is relevant to the current
moment of global populism, discourses of sovereignty, and the role of alter-
native media in nationalist politics. I highlight the island’s diversity of local
traditions relating to the characters and events of the Ramayana to argue that
the twenty-first-century Ravana renaissance did not create its topography of
the demon-king’s domain altogether ex nihilo, but rather built upon a pre-
existing repertoire of lore and textual tradition. The notion that the island of
Lanka was Ravana’s “Lankapura” was from early on a tradition of common
people, an idea preserved in the vernacular, and a proposition (most likely
intentionally) excluded by the learned monks who wrote the first histories of
the island in Pali. It is on this basis that I refer to Ravana’s kingdom as a pop-
ulist vision of history—first in reference to the premodern context wherein
legends of Rama, Ravana, and Sita remained the provenance of popular,
rather than scholastic history, and second to denote the manner in which
the Sinhala Ravana phenomenon has manifested in the twenty-first-century
information age. The bricoleurs hard at work constructing this new vision
of Sinhala history come from all strata of Sri Lankan society: they include
amateur historians, social media “influencers,” ambassadors, poets lau-
reate, prominent university professors, and even the current and previous
Presidents of Sri Lanka. While I document state-level endorsement of the
Sinhala Ravana narrative in several instances, “Yaksha civilization” has in
large part been reconstructed informally over the past decade by commu-
nities of private enthusiasts—united around interests as varied as pop-art,
home gardening, video games, and mixed martial arts—all of whom have
found inspiration in the island’s putative king of deep antiquity, and who cel-
ebrate his legacy.
1.2 RAVANA’S KINGDOM AND TWENTY-FIRST-
CENTURY POPULISM
In Sri Lankan today, one repeatedly hears that the story of Ravana is “a
true account” (säbä ̄ caritayak), that it is “not a mythical fiction” (mithyā
prabandhayak neme). Historical details found in classical literary works—
including Sri Lanka’s Buddhist chronicles, canonical Pali Suttas, and Sanskrit
epics—are given boilerplate literal readings by Ravana enthusiasts, for whom
positivism has become a static interpretative paradigm (Leopold von Ranke

is even invoked by name).4 Beyond such naïve empiricism (to which we are
already well accustomed in the context of other South Asian archaic modern-
ities), physical evidence is paramount to the reclamation of Ravana’s kingdom
in Sri Lanka today. Leading voices of the movement have produced allegedly
never- before-seen palm-leaf manuscripts, epigraphs, and archaeological
discoveries in startling volume. Amateur treasure hunters make headlines
trespassing on government property in search of Ravana’s buried technolog-
ical wealth. GoPro-captured video of spelunkers exploring “Ravana’s caves”
in the island’s central highlands have garnered millions of views on YouTube.
In July 2020 the Sri Lankan Civil Aviation Authority published a newspaper
advert soliciting the general public for any documents which might allow
them to further reconstruct the schematics of Ravana’s mechanical aircraft
(having determined at a massive symposium the year prior that Ravana, not
the Wright Brothers, was the world’s first aviator). Within a week the agency
reported that they had received one hundred responses.
Ravana’s kingdom is imagined today as something tangible, something im-
mediately accessible to all, with its reconstruction having taken the form of
a participatory public spectacle. The operative word here—a word reiterated
again and again amid discussions between Ravana researchers—is sākṣaya,
the Sinhala word for “evidence,” derived from a Sanskrit term meaning
“[seen] with the eyes.” This dimension of Ravana’s kingdom reveals a variety
of populist epistemology with significant contrasts to that found in the United
States today. The right-wing assault on academics, journalists, and scientists
in the post-truth era of America is underwritten by a radically interior theory
of knowledge, in which moral uprightness is viewed as necessary for a clear
perception of the facts of the world. The conceit that conventional author-
ities in the realm of knowledge production have been lured and corrupted
by monied interests renders it the individual’s responsibility to determine
for himself the most sensible precautions to take amid a virus outbreak, the
suitability of a vaccination regimen for children, and the reality of anthropo-
genic climate change.5 Such a perspective, along with its corresponding an-
tagonism on the part of factions of the American right toward journalists and
academics, has no real parallel in the twenty-first-century Sinhala Ravana
movement. Although a contingent of Sri Lankan academics have repudi-
ated the movement’s claims,6 in general Sinhala Ravana enthusiasts do not
give the sense that they are academic outsiders, nor that their views are in
some way removed from current scholarly consensus. Indeed, a number of
high-profile Sri Lankan academics have come out in support of the Sinhala

Ravana movement, and several leading Ravana promoters with no scholarly
credentials style themselves “professor.” Leading Colombo newspapers have
carried full-page spread interviews with Ravana promoters. In the quest for
the lost treasures of Ravana’s kingdom, only very rarely do we find appeals to
distinguish “native” from “western” forms of scientific knowledge, as is, for
example, common among Hindutva promoters of “Vedic” math and science
in India.7 To the contrary, Sinhala Ravana enthusiasts appear convinced of
the potential universal value of the lost technology (tākṣaṇaya) of the Hela-
Yaksha civilization of antiquity. This outlook is illustrated in the words of one
Ravana treasure-seeker, a young Sinhala Buddhist woman reporting to have
been directed to a cache of ancient technological goods in the vicinity of the
remote mountain town of Ella by a cohort of invisible devas. After the story
of her expedition party appeared in a Colombo newspaper, she explained in a
2016 interview that hidden within the region’s caves are:
powerful things (prabala vastu) which Ravana possessed—things which to
this very day have enhanced our country, but which in the future may serve
to enhance all the nations of the world . . . while these are not valuables in
