Solve the following sums: --

1. The ratio of incomes of two persons is 11: 7 and the ratio of their expenditures is 9: 5. If each
of them manages to save Rs. 400 per month, find their monthly incomes.
2. A railway half ticket costs half the full fare and the reservation charge is the same on half
ticket as on full ticket. One reserved first class ticket from Mumbai to Ahmedabad costs Rs
216 and one full and one half reserved first class ticket costs Rs 327. What is the basic first
class full fare and what are the reservation charges?
3. Two places A and B are 100 km apart. One car starts from A and another from B at the
same time. If they travel in the same direction, they meet after 5 hours. If they travel towards
each other, they meet in 1 hour. What are the speeds of the two cars? Assume that the
speed of a car at A is more than the speed of a car at B.
4. A two digit number is obtained by either multiplying the sum of the digit by 8 and then
subtracting 5 or by multiplying the difference of the digits by 16 and then adding 3. Find the
number.
5. In a deer park, the number of heads and the number of legs of deer and human visitors were
counted and it was found that there were 39 heads and132 legs. Find the number of deer
and human visitors in the park.
6. A train covered a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train would have been 6 km/h
faster, it would have taken 4 hours less than the scheduled time. And if the train were slower
by 6 km/h.,it would have taken 6 hours more than the scheduled time. Find the length of the
journey.
7. The students of a class are made to stand in a row. If 3 students are extra in a row, there
would be 1 row less. If 3 students are less in a row, there would be 2 rows more. Find the
number of students in the class.
8. Solve for x and y , ax/b - by/a = a+b; ax - by = 2ab
9. The age of a father is equal to the sum of the ages of his 5 children. After 15 years, the sum
of the ages of the children will be twice the age of the father. Find the age of the father.
10. Solve for x and y , 2(ax-by)+(a+4b)=0; 2(bx+ay)+(b-4a)=0
