Urban Heat Island Analysis in Mangaldai

On March 7, 2025, urban temperatures reached 51.1 °C, significantly higher than non-urban temperatures of 39.0 °C, resulting in a high Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect of +12.1 °C due to factors like open asphalt and weak wind. The Nodal Point at Mangaldai College showed slightly lower temperatures due to surrounding structures, while non-urban areas benefited from vegetative cooling. The urban asphalt retained heat throughout the day, contributing to higher evening temperatures despite shade presence.

Analysis:
In afternoon, the UHI is unusually high in Urban site (Bhebarghat Road, NH-15) located Near
bus stand, Open junction. The UHI value is +12.1°C, likely due to: Open asphalt, Bare shade,
High sun angle, Weak wind, No vegetation cooling. As a result the asphalt absorbed full solar
radiation, that’s why surface temperature reached 51.1°C.

The Nodal Point (Mangaldai collage front) it is open but less exposed than Bhebarghat, the
surrounding collage wall and campus might have broken some radiation. Therefore, the
temperature (48.6°C) is slightly less than urban, but still hot.

Contrary to this, the non-urban site (just near Block-Chowk), Coordinates: 26.4241692N,
01.9990447E is surrounded with tea garden, sericulture and trees on both sides. However the
measurement was on exposed road, without any shade but still the temperature stayed at 39.0°C
due to surrounding vegetative cooling.

In Evening, even though shade was present everywhere, the urban asphalt at Bhebarghat retained
significantly more heat (41.3°C) than the non urban Block-chowk (35.4°C), showing strong
thermal inertia. The nodal point at Mangaldai collage acted as a tranisition zone, cooling faster
than urban asphalt but slower than non rural site.

Why Urban was still hot even with shade?

Based on observation the asphalt stores heat deeply during the peak sun hours (1-3PM). After the
sunset, it slowly releases that heat called thermal lag. The Bhebarghat is a junction with buses,
autos and e-rickshaws, the hot engines, exhaust, braking friction creates an extra heat in local air
which is creating a hot pocket zone.
