Clean water, a human right not a luxury

Our donors and supporters are the nourishment for the body
and heart of Water for Cambodia… organizations, students,
students
companies, families and individuals from across the globe
have, unselfishly given time, skills and financial support,
changing the lives of tens of thousands of total strangers
because they saw the need and answered it. Though they are
too numerous to mention… a select group can tell the story.
Bridgewater State University has been both a financial and technical partner since
2007; they have contributed volunteers, donations and vital technical support to
the laboratory operation. Hundreds of faculty and staff have participated in building
and installing filters, working with families and raising funds to help WFC to fulfill
its goals. Thru BSU’s efforts Pannasastra University of Cambodia became a
partner and source of student volunteers and interns more than 15 tears ago.
Singapore International Foundation chose
Water for Cambodia as its primary funded
project in Cambodia beginning in 2012. SIF
serves as a conduit for institutional and
corporate donors. As part of its mandate
SIF carefully vets each partner. WFC has
been and continues to be a primary partner.
To date nearly
75 groups have
brought more
than a thousand volunteers representing all walks of
Singaporean life to Cambodia to build and install filters
and interact with village families. After this experience
many return and donate private funds and time as
volunteers. Their personal interaction with local families
leaves an indelible imprint on each one.
Rotary International has been an integral part of and partner with Water for
Cambodia since our founding in 2005. This legacy of volunteerism continues
today thru the generosity and direct involvement of clubs from around the world.
Cambodia’s near neighbor from Australia has made its support and presence
noted recently.
In November, the ‘Young Adult Police Legatees’ who were participating in the
Victoria Police Legacy/Rotary ‘World of Difference’
Humanitarian Tour
visited WFC. They
joined with the staff
building and installing
bio-sand filters. The
visitors installed 18
units in a local village
near the city of Siem
Reap. Each unit
allows a Cambodian family to have safe water.
“Just something that we in Australia take for granted!”
Private school student groups from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia,
United Kingdom and South Korea periodically visit. They join the WFC staff in
helping make clean safe water available while learning first-hand about the daily
challenges of their earth neighbors. Both school and family visitors are especially
welcomed by the team because teaching the next generation of young people who
have never suffered its lack, about the critical importance of clean water is prime
to their mission.
Recently 19 students and 3 teachers
from All Saint’s College in Perth
Australia pitched in to build and
deliver bio-sand filters to several
families. The students demonstrated
the school principle: "founded on an
understanding of the importance of
looking out from ourselves and to
make a positive difference in the
world”.
The team at Water for Cambodia
welcomed students from the Dwight
School, Seoul, one of a network of seven
international baccalaureate schools
worldwide. Dwight students experienced
fresh cultural experiences and broadened
their world view while providing clean safe
water to a local village. These students
representing Korea’s future leaders will
return home with a new understanding of the unique needs and challenges facing
families in an emerging third world society.

Today’s staff profile introduces HAK Huch and conveys
news of a major milestone in Minea’s road to recovery
HAK Huch has been a dedicated part of Water for Cambodia for over six and a
half years, working alongside Mr. Samley to bring clean water, sanitation, and
hygiene (WASH) education to rural communities.
Huch is known for his big heart and strong spirit.
He loves working with people, and the feeling is
mutual. Community members, village leaders,
students, and teachers all appreciate his
kindness, communication skills and hands-on
support. Whether he's building latrines, digging
wells, or leading WASH training, Huch brings
energy and care to everything he does.
Huch joined Water for Cambodia after working
as a supermarket security guard. He is originally
from a farming family in Angkor Thom District, an area we’re currently focused on.
His dedication and active nature caught the eye of our former director, Mr. Luigi,
who quickly welcomed him to the team.
Today, he plays a key role in our projects and often steps in to lead when needed.
He’s married and has one daughter. Huch continues to inspire the whole team with
his commitment to building healthier communities.
Minea continues to gain strength and move towards
full recovery. In March he achieved a very significant
milestone… he travelled to Phnom Penh were he
was fitted with his new prosthesis. The entire team
eagerly anticipates his return. When he does, Minea
will begin a new assignment in the lab. He will train
under Rithy as the newest lab assistant.
