GE23111 – ENGINEERING GRAPHICS

ASSIGNMENT – 1

Date of Submission: 26-Sep-2025

Conics:

1. Draw an ellipse when the distance of its vertex from its directrix is 24 mm and distance
of its focus from directrix is 42 mm. Also draw a normal and tangent to a point on the
ellipse which is at a distance of 80 mm from the directrix.
2. Draw a parabola when the distance between focus and directrix is 60 mm. Draw a
tangent and normal at a point distance 70 mm from the directrix.
3. The distance between the fixed point and a fixed line is 54 mm. Trace the path of a point
moving in the same plane such that its distance between the fixed point and the fixed
line is always equal. If the point moves upto 72 mm from the fixed point, plot the curve.
4. The focus of a hyperbola is 60 mm from its directrix. Draw the curve when eccentricity
is 5/3. Draw a tangent and a normal to the curve at a point 45 mm from the directrix.

Cycloidal Curves:

5. A coin of 45 mm diameter rolls in a straight line on a table. Plot and name the locus of a
point lying on the circumference of the coin. Draw a tangent and normal to the curve at
the point on it which is 35 mm from the table.
6. A circular wheel of 60 mm diameter rolls on another fixed wheel of 80 mm radius and
above it for one complete revolution of the rolling wheel. Draw the curve traced by a
point on the circumference of the rolling wheel which is initially situated at the
common contact between the wheels. Draw a tangent and normal to the curve at the
point on it which is 120 mm from the center of the fixed wheel.
7. Draw hypocycloid of a circle of 48 mm diameter rolls inside the convex shape of
generating circle of radius 100 mm for one complete revolution counter clockwise. Draw
a tangent and normal to anywhere on the curve.
Involutes
8. Develop the involute of a square of side 30 mm. Also draw the tangent and normal at any
point on the curve.
9. A circular disc of 30 mm diameter is wound by a taut string, single turn. To draw the locus of the
free-end point of the string as it is gradually unwound clockwise. Also to draw tangent and
normal at any point on the traced curve.
10. An inelastic string of 155 mm length has its one end attached to the bottom most point
of the circumference of a circular disc of 40 mm diameter. Draw the curve traced by the
other end of the string when it is completely wound around the disc keeping the string
always tight. Name the curve obtained. Draw the tangent and normal to the curve at a
point 100 mm from the Centre of the disc (Answer can be as same as below Fig.).

Projection of Points:

11. Draw the orthographic projections of the following points:

a) Point A is 35 mm above H.P and 30 mm in front of VP
b) Point B is 20 mm above H.P and 25 mm behind VP
c) Point C is 32 mm below H.P and 45 mm behind VP
d) Point D is 35 mm below H.P and 40 mm in front of VP
e) Point E is on H.P and 25 mm behind VP
f) Point F is in V.P and 35 mm below HP
g) Point G is in V.P and 30 mm above H.P
h) Point H is on H.P and 40 mm in front of VP
i) Point I on H.P and in VP.
