Wave Optics: Young's Double Slit Analysis

The document contains a home assignment for Class XII Physics focusing on Wave Optics, specifically the Young's double slit experiment. It includes questions regarding the effects of various changes on the interference pattern, calculations of intensity ratios, and comparisons between diffraction patterns and interference fringes. Additionally, it provides specific problems related to path differences and intensity calculations in the context of the experiment.

Class XII
Chapter 10:WAVE OPTICS
1. What is the effect on the interference pattern observed in a Young’s double slit experiment in the
following cases:
i) Screen is moved away from the plane of the slits
ii) Separation between the slits is reduced
iii) Widths of the slits are doubled
iv) Monochromatic source is replaced by another monochromatic source of shorter wavelength
v) Monochromatic source is replaced by white light.
vi) The apparatus is immersed in water.
2. The intensity ratio in the interference pattern is 1:9. What are the amplitude ratio of the sources?
3. In Young’s double slit experiment, the intensity of light at a point on the screen where the path
difference is λ is k units. Find intensity at a point where the path difference is (i) λ/4, (ii) λ/3.
[k/2, k/4]
4. In a Young’s double slit experiment, two light waves, each of intensity I0, interfere at a point, having a
path difference λ/8 on the screen. Find the intensity at this point. [AISSCE 2025] [3.41 I0]
5. In Young’s double slit experiment, the separation between the two slits is 1.0 mm and the screen is 1 m
away from the slits. A beam of light consisting of two wavelengths 500 nm and 600 nm is used to
obtain interference fringes. Calculate
(i) The distance between the first maxima for the two wavelengths.
(ii) The least distance from the central maxima, where the bright fringes due to both wavelengths
coincide. [AISSCE 2025 Outside Delhi][10-4 m, n=5, x = 3mm]
6. Compare between a diffraction pattern due to a single slit and the interference fringes produced in
Young’s double slit experiment.
7. The intensity at the central maxima (O) in a Young’s double slit experiment is I0. If the distance OP
equals 1/3 of fringe width of the pattern, show that intensity at point P would be I 0/4.
