Introduction
ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE(ANOVA) is a method for testing
the hypothesis that there is no difference between two or
more population mean.
The ANOVA technique enables us to perform the
simultaneous test.
• The ANOVA technique is important in the context of
those situations where we want to compare more than
two population.
• In such circumstances we do not want to consider all
possible combinations of two populations at a time for
that we would require a great number of test.
• ANOVA is a procedure for testing the difference among
different group of data for homogeneity.
• The basic principle of ANOVA is to test for differences
among the means of the population by examining the
amount of variation within each of these samples ,
relative to the amount of variation between the samples.
• The total variance in the joint sample is partitioned into
two parts
– Between sample variance
– Within sample variance
• Between samples variance is due to different treatments
while within samples is due to random disturbances.
•
Assumptions in ANOVA
• The experimental errors of data are normally distributed.
• Equal variances between treatments.
• Independence of samples
One way ANOVA(SINGLE FACTOR)
• T is the simplest type of ANOVA,in which only one source
of variation,or factor is investigated.
• It is an extension to three or more samples of the t test
procedure for use with two independent samples.
• In another way t test for use with two independent
samples is a special case of one way ANOVA
The technique involves the following steps
•
•
• Analysis of variance table
Source of Sum of Degree of
freedom
variation squares
(SS)
Between SS between (k-1)
samples
Within SS within (n-k) SS within/(n-k)
samples
Total (n-1)
i=1,2,3,…….
J=1,2,3,…….
set up an analysis of variance table for the following per
acre production data for three varieties of wheat, each grown
on 4 plots and state if the variety differences are significant
Per acre production data
Plot of land Variety of wheat
A B C
1 6 5 5
2 7 5 4
3 3 3 3
4 8 7 4
•
4)SS within = 24
5) SS for total variance = 32
Now we setup ANOVA table
SOURCE OF SS D.F MS F RATIO
VARIANCE
BETWEEN 8 3-1=2 8/2=4 4/2.67=1.5
SAMPLE
WITHIN 24 12-3=9 24/9=2.67
SAMPLE
TOTAL 32 12-1=11
Critical value F at 5% level with d.f. (2,9) is 4.26
Calculated value is 1.5<4.26
It mean null hypothesis is true means difference in wheat
output due to varieties is insignificant .
