Solutions for h i d t e r m ~ro;blenk,Fall 03

Dr. Amir G. Aghdam
Problem 1:
Conslder the following closed-loop system:

a) For what controller parameters a and k closed-loop poles are located at - 1f j?

The closed loop transfer function:
k

H (s) = ( s + a ) ( s + l ) - k
k s2+(a+l)s+(a+k)
1+
(s + a)(s + 1)
Therefore
a+l=2

which leads to

b) Using a and k found in (a), find the DC Gain of the closed-loop system.

c) Using a and k found in (a), find the step response of the closed-loop system.

Problem 16:
Consider the following block diagram.

a) Draw the equivalent Signal Flow Graph.

b) Find the transfer function of the closed loop system (from r to y ).

C) Suppose G I= -
s+l
and
.
G1= -. Find G, such that output
s-1
y 1s always zero

(regardless of the input r ). -- , -

Solution:

a) By breaking the input signals to two separate signals, one as r and the other one
as G,r as explained in the lecture, and applying superposition, we will have:

Problem 3

-
The block diagram of a DC motor with a constant controller is given below:

Controller Motor

The srep response of the closed loop system is given in the following figure. F~ndk and
r . (4 marks)

Solution:

This problem is very similar to Problem 3 of Assignment 4: We have:

-
-n
P.O.= 35% erne = 0.35 a F = cos(0) = 0.32

On the other hand:

-2K
=0(s) 1 = 2K - 7 -- 1.5
0,(s) S - 1 u Z + s + 2 K S 2 +-s+-
1 2K s2+0.78s+1.5

This results in:
K = 0.96. r = 1.28

Problem 4:
Consider the following mechanical system.
... .
-

a) Write the differential equation of this system.

d- d
M-x(r) + B-x(r) + Kx(r) = f (r)
dl - dl

b) Find the transfer function from f (r) to x(r) .

X (s) 1

F(s) ~ s l + B s + K

C) Assuming M = 1Kg and B = I - N

m / sec
, find the spring constant K such that the
system is critically damped ( = 1).
s 2 + 2 ~ w n s + q 2 = s 2 + s + 2~=aKu, ~ 2/w,
. =1
J = 1 3 w, = 0.5 a K = 0.25
