Irvine's Farm Water Crisis Solutions

Irvine’s Farm in Harare South is experiencing a severe water shortage due to decreased rainfall and outdated irrigation systems, leading to low crop yields and poor livestock health. The project aims to investigate the issue and propose solutions, including solar-powered borehole pumps and drip irrigation. The final recommendation focuses on implementing a solar-powered borehole pump with drip irrigation for sustainable water management.

Water Crisis at Irvine’s Farm: A Case

Study for Harare South Farms

By Tarirekuona Adrian

Stage 1: Problem Identification

Description of the Problem

Irvine’s Farm in Harare South has been facing a serious water shortage. Rainfall has gone
down, boreholes are running dry, and irrigation systems are old. This has caused low crop
yields, poor livestock health, and reduced profits.

Brief Statement of Intent

The aim of this project is to study the water shortage at Irvine’s Farm and suggest
possible solutions that can help reduce the problem.

Design

The project is designed in 5 parts:

1. Identifying the problem.

2. Investigating related ideas.
3. Producing possible solutions.
4. Refining the chosen idea.
5. Showing the final solution.

Stage 2: Investigation of Related Ideas

2.1 Evidence of Related Ideas

 Rainwater harvesting using tanks and gutters.

 Solar pumps for boreholes.
 Drip irrigation.
 Growing drought-resistant crops.
 Recycling wastewater.

2.2 Analysis of Ideas

 Rainwater harvesting: cheap but only works when it rains.

 Solar pumps: reliable but expensive to set up.
 Drip irrigation: saves water but pipes may block.
 Drought crops: use less water but not all are profitable.
 Water recycling: effective but needs experts.

2.3 Overall Quality of Presentation of Ideas

The ideas are clear and realistic, though not very detailed in cost and management.

Stage 3: Generation of Ideas

3.1 Evidence of Possible Solutions

1. Install solar-powered borehole pump.

2. Collect rainwater with tanks.
3. Use drip irrigation for crops.
4. Introduce drought-resistant crops.

3.2 Advantages

 Reduces water wastage.

 Improves crop yields.
 Makes farming more reliable.

3.3 Disadvantages

 High starting cost.

 Needs training to maintain.
 Some methods depend on rainfall.

3.4 Overall Quality of Illustrations

Stage 4: Development / Refinement of Chosen Idea

4.1 Indication of Choice

The chosen idea is solar-powered borehole pump with drip irrigation.

4.2 Justification of Choice

It was chosen because it provides a steady water supply and saves water. Although
expensive, it is more sustainable in the long term.

4.3 Three Developments

1. Add solar panels to power the pump.

2. Store pumped water in a large tank.
3. Connect tank to drip irrigation pipes.

4.4 Overall Presentation

The chosen idea is presented clearly with both text and diagrams, though cost and
maintenance details are brief.

Stage 5: Presentation of Final Solutions

5.1 Presentation of an Artefact

The artefact is a farm model showing solar panels, a borehole pump, a storage tank, and drip
irrigation pipes leading to crops.
