Water Crisis at Irvine’s Farm: A Case
Study for Harare South Farms
By Chasi Arnold
Stage 1: Problem Identification
Description of the Problem
Irvine’s Farm in Harare South has a shortage of water. Boreholes are not giving enough
water, rainfall is low, and dams are drying up. The irrigation system is old and wastes water.
This has reduced production and made farming less profitable.
Brief Statement of Intent
This project will study the water problems at Irvine’s Farm and suggest possible solutions
that can help reduce water shortages.
Design
The project will be done as a case study. The main design is to identify the problem, check
related ideas, create possible solutions, and then choose the best one.
Stage 2: Investigation of Related Ideas
2.1 Evidence of Related Ideas
Drip irrigation.
Solar-powered pumps.
Rainwater harvesting tanks.
Drought-tolerant crops.
2.2 Analysis of Ideas
Drip irrigation saves water but costs a lot to install.
Solar pumps reduce electricity use but are expensive.
Rainwater tanks are easy to use but depend on rainfall.
Drought crops need less water but may give less profit.
2.3 Overall Quality of Presentation of Ideas
The ideas are good but not fully explained. They are only presented briefly.
Stage 3: Generation of Ideas
3.1 Evidence of Possible Solutions
1. Install drip irrigation.
2. Build a medium-sized dam.
3. Use solar-powered boreholes.
4. Collect rainwater in tanks.
3.2 Advantages
More efficient use of water.
Lower long-term costs with solar.
Improved production.
3.3 Disadvantages
High starting costs.
Needs training for workers.
Rainfall still affects some solutions.
3.4 Overall Quality of Illustrations
Only simple diagrams are included, not detailed.

Stage 4: Development / Refinement of Chosen Idea
4.1 Indication of Choice
The chosen idea is solar-powered boreholes.
4.2 Justification of Choice
This was chosen because it provides reliable water and reduces electricity bills.
4.3 Three Developments
1. Put solar panels on borehole pumps.
2. Add storage tanks for water.
3. Link tanks to simple irrigation pipes.
4.4 Overall Presentation
The idea is good, but details like cost and maintenance are not included.
Stage 5: Presentation of Final Solutions
5.1 Presentation of an Artefact
The artefact will be a model showing:
Solar panels.
Borehole pump.
Tank connected to irrigation pipes.
