Giraffes live in groups called herds. The herds are found in the savannas of Africa. Savannas are warm
places that have grasses and trees.
A giraffe spends a lot of time eating. It likes fresh leaves that grow on trees. The giraffe's long, black
tongue helps it pull leaves off tree branches.
Giraffes usually sleep standing up. Sometimes, however, they do lie down. A giraffe can tuck its legs
under its body and then rest its head on its back.

Hearing
Hearing
How do you hear? With your ears, of course! Hearing is one of your five senses.
There is sound all around you. Your ears help you take in those sounds. That way, you know more about
what is happening around you.
The part of the ear that you can see is called the pinna. This is the part that gathers sounds. From there,
the sound goes further into your ear.
When the sound goes further in, it reaches your eardrum. Your eardrum is not a real drum! It's a piece of
skin. The sound makes your eardrum shake. And that makes other parts far inside your ear move, too.
When that happens, your brain knows that you heard a sound. It tells you what you heard!

Horses, Carriages, and Wagons

Many years ago, people used horses to get from one place to another. Sometimes, people rode on the
backs of the horses. Other times, horses were used to pull carriages.
The carriages carried people where they wanted to go. The roads were made mostly of dirt. The ride was
bumpy. But the people got where they wanted to go.
When people wanted to move things, they used wagons. The wagons carried food, milk, ice, and other
things. Horses pulled the wagons too. A driver held the reins and guided the horses. That was long ago.
Today, some people still use horses, carriages, and wagons. But now many people use trains, cars, and

How Big Is the Moon?
How Big Is the Moon?

The moon is Earth's nearest neighbor in space. The moon is millions of miles closer to Earth than any of
the planets.
You might think the moon is as large as the sun. After all, the full moon looks very big when it is in the

The only reason the moon looks big to us is because it is so close to Earth.

How Owls See
How Owls See
by Susan LaBella
Owls have claws and beaks. They have big eyes that see very well in the dark. But owls cannot move
their eyes from side to side. An owl can only look straight ahead. So how does it see something that is
behind it? The owl turns its head all the way around!
Humans can't do that. If people want to see what is behind them, they have to turn their bodies around.
But an owl can rotate just its head to look in the opposite direction. Owls can even turn their heads upside
down!
The owl's big eyes and amazing turning head make it a great night hunter.

How Your Ears Work
How Your Ears Work
by Rachelle Kreisman
What do you hear? You may hear people talking. You may hear a
car or the wind or music. Your ears help you hear those sounds.
Sound travels in waves. The waves go into your outer ear. That is
the part you see. Inside your ear, sound waves go through a tiny
tunnel. It is called the ear canal.
[Link] · © 2014 ReadWorks®, Inc. All rights reserved. 176
How Your Ears Work
Those waves hit stretched-out pieces of skin called eardrums. The
eardrums vibrate. That means they shake back and forth.
Your inner ear turns those vibrations into a signal. That signal goes
to your brain. The brain understands that the signal is a sound.
What is the result? You hear something!

Have you heard of the country Iceland?
Iceland is a small island country. It is located in the North Atlantic
Ocean. It is pretty far north!
Iceland may sound like it's a very icy place because of its name.
But it is a place with lots of different types of land. There are places
with lots of ice. Those places are called ice caps or glaciers. There
are also places with lots of green grass and moss. And there are
places covered in lava that's turned into rock. That lava came from
