Through our right conscience we are guided to do good

and avoid evil. The reality of this conscience points to the
existence of a universal, eternal and objective
law. Logically, there must be some objective norms to
guide people on how to guide people on how to treat one
another.
Law is at the heart of our
becoming more fully human.
Young men and women who
dream of excelling in
something – arts, business,
sports or academics—know
the value of learning and
respecting the laws or
standards that govern their
particular interest.
According to St. Thomas
Aquinas, LAW is an ordinance
of reason promulgated by
competent authority for the
sake of the common good.

REPORTING OF
GROUP 1 - 4
Universal Law

Universal laws like the Ten Commandments cover the full

scope of human existence. However, there are what we call
civil laws, rules and regulations that a citizen of a nation must
follow.
Universal/Just laws have four characteristics.
1. Ordinance of reason.
2. Promulgated and communicated JUST LAW
3. By a competent authority
4. For the common good
JUST LAW

1. Just law is an ordinance of reason – means that a good law

must be REASONABLE.

2. Just law is properly promulgated – laws must be clearly

COMMUNICATED TO ALL PEOPLE CONCERNED.

3. Just law must be decreed by competent authority – only

PERSON WITH LIGITIMATE AUTHORITY have the power to
create and implement laws for their respective communities.

4. Just law must be for the sake of the common good – it

presupposes the promotion of and respect for the dignity and
true freedom of each person
Universal Law

However, since these laws were created

by men, they are bound to limitations,
namely:
1. Limitations of words
2. Unjust laws
3. Implementations of the law.

Doctrine

The moral law finds its fullness and its

unity in Christ. Jesus Christ is in person
the way of perfection. He is the end of
the law, for only he teaches and bestows
the justice of God: "For Christ is the
end of the law, that everyone who
has faith may be justified. (CCC 1953)

Doctrine

In working for peace, virtues are

required. We had already seen that laws
have limitations, if we don’t value
peace, if we don’t value anything, the
quest for peace will remain
elusive. In order to pursue peace, the
virtue of Justice is of prime importance.
