Key Education Loan Schemes in India

The Indian government offers various education loan schemes, primarily through the PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme, to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder students from pursuing higher education. Key components include the Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme, which provides interest subsidies for eligible students, and the Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme, which encourages banks to lend without collateral for loans up to ₹7.5 lakh. Additional schemes cater to specific communities, and the loan process is facilitated through a unified online platform for transparency and accessibility.

The Indian government facilitates education loans primarily through

the Pradhan Mantri Vidyalaxmi (PM-Vidyalaxmi) Scheme, which includes

components like the Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS) Scheme and
the Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for Education Loans (CGFSEL). These
schemes aim to ensure that no student is denied higher education due to
financial constraints.
Key Government Education Loan Schemes
• PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme: This serves as a unified online platform
([Link]) for students to apply for education loans from various
banks, track their application status, and access information on scholarships. It
provides a transparent, student-friendly digital process.

• Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS) Scheme: This scheme provides a full
interest subsidy during the moratorium period (course duration plus one year) on
education loans up to ₹10 lakh.

o Eligibility: Students from economically weaker sections with an annual

family income of up to ₹4.5 lakh are eligible. The subsidy is for
professional/technical courses in accredited Indian institutions.

• Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for Education Loans (CGFSEL): Under this
scheme, the Central Government provides a guarantee for education loans
sanctioned without collateral or third-party guarantees for amounts up to ₹7.5
lakh. This encourages banks to lend to students from less affluent backgrounds.

• Schemes for specific communities:

o National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation

(NBCFDC): Offers loans for OBC students with family income up to ₹3 lakh
per annum at concessional interest rates (e.g., 4% for boys, 3.5% for girls).

o National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation

(NSFDC): Provides loans for SC students with family income up to ₹3 lakh
per annum, with interest rates around 4% (0.5% rebate for female
students).

General Features and Eligibility

• Eligibility: The applicant must be an Indian citizen and have secured admission
to a recognized institution or course, usually on a merit basis. A co-applicant
(parent/guardian/spouse) with a stable income is typically required.
• Loan Amount: The amount varies by scheme and bank. Under the PM-Vidyalaxmi
scheme, there is no upper limit for students admitted to designated Quality
Higher Educational Institutions (QHEIs), and the loan covers all reasonable
course-related expenses.

• Collateral: For loans up to ₹7.5 lakh, no collateral or third-party guarantee is

generally required, as they are covered by the CGFSEL. For higher amounts,
collateral may be necessary.

• Interest Rates: Rates are linked to the bank's Externally Benchmarked Lending
Rate (EBLR). Concessional rates or interest subsidies are available under various
government schemes for eligible students.

• Moratorium Period: Repayment generally starts one year after the course
completion or six months after securing a job, whichever is earlier. Full interest
subsidy may apply during this period under schemes like CSIS.

• Tax Benefit: Interest paid on education loans is eligible for deduction under
Section 80E of the Income Tax Act

A term loan granted to Indian Nationals for pursuing higher education in India or abroad
where admission has been secured.
