Cleaning a Busy Corridor

When cleaning a corridor that many people use throughout the day, safety and order are
very important. Follow these simple steps to make sure the work is done well and safely:

1. Gather all your cleaning tools such as mop, bucket, detergent, broom, dustpan and
warning signs like “Wet Floor.” Wear gloves, closed shoes, and a reflective vest if needed.

2. Put up warning signs at both ends of the corridor to warn people that cleaning is in
progress. If the corridor is long, clean it in sections so people can still pass safely.

3. Sweep or vacuum the floor first to remove dust, paper, and other debris before using
water.

4. Mix the cleaning solution as directed and mop one section at a time, starting from the
farthest end and moving toward the exit so you don’t step on the wet floor. Try to clean
during less busy times, like early morning or late evening.

5. Rinse the mop often and use clean water to remove soap from the floor. Let the floor dry
completely before removing the warning signs. Use a dry mop or fan to speed up drying if
needed.

6. Once done, check the corridor to ensure it is clean, dry, and safe. Remove the signs and
store your equipment properly.

Always remember the following;

- Never leave water or tools unattended.
- Always use warning signs.
- Avoid using too much water, especially on slippery or shiny floors.

2. Cleaning a Guest-Occupied Room

Cleaning a room while a guest is still staying there requires respect, good communication,
and care. Here’s how to do it properly:

1. Gather all your cleaning items — dusters, mop, disinfectant, vacuum, towels, toiletries,
and replacement linens. Wear gloves and an apron.

2. Knock softly and greet the guest politely, saying for example, “Good morning,
housekeeping.” Ask if you may clean the room. If the guest says no, record it as ‘Do Not
Disturb’ and return later.

3. If the guest allows, enter the room carefully, keep the door open, and place a
“Housekeeping in Progress” sign outside. Avoid touching the guest’s belongings.

4. Open windows or curtains to let in fresh air. Empty the bins, collect used dishes or trays,
and remove dirty towels or bed linen.
5. Dust and wipe surfaces, starting from the top down. Disinfect areas people touch often,
like switches and handles. Make the bed neatly and replace sheets if needed.

6. In the bathroom, clean the sink, toilet, shower, and mirrors thoroughly. Replace toiletries,
tissues, and towels.

7. Vacuum or mop the floor, checking under furniture for any dirt. Make sure there are no
bad smells left.

8. When done, thank the guest if they are there, take out the trash and tools, close the door
properly, and mark the room as cleaned.

Key Reminders:
- Be respectful and polite.
- Keep noise low.
- Never use guest items.
- Always maintain professionalism.
