6. PROCEDURE
1. Purpose
To ensure proper cleaning and maintenance of the air oil filter in compressors to maintain efficiency, prevent contamination, and extend
equipment life.

2. Scope
This SOP applies to all air compressors equipped with air oil filters in [Facility/Plant Name].

3. Responsibilities
Maintenance Technician: Perform cleaning and inspection.
Maintenance Supervisor: Verify completion and ensure proper documentation.
4. Safety Precautions
Isolate and shut down the compressor.
Depressurize the system completely.
Wear appropriate PPE: gloves, goggles, and mask.
Handle oil and cleaning agents as per MSDS guidelines.
5. Tools & Materials Required
Clean cloth or soft brush
Mild detergent or approved cleaning solvent
Compressed air blower
Oil drain container

6. Procedure
6.1 Preparation
Notify relevant personnel.
Shut down and isolate the compressor.
Allow the unit to cool down.
Gather all required tools and PPE.
6.2 Filter Removal
Locate the air oil filter housing.
Use appropriate tools to open the housing.
Carefully remove the filter and drain residual oil into a container.
6.3 Inspection
Check for clogging, oil saturation, or physical damage.
If damaged or excessively dirty, replace the filter.
6.4 Cleaning
Reusable Filter: Wash with mild detergent or solvent. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
Non-reusable Filter: Dispose of as per waste management guidelines.
6.5 Reinstallation
Reinstall the cleaned or new filter.
Ensure proper sealing and secure the housing.

6.6 Final Checks

Restart the compressor.
Monitor for leaks, abnormal noise, or pressure issues.
Record the maintenance activity in the logbook.
7. Frequency
Every 500–1000 operating hours or as per manufacturer’s recommendation.
8. Documentation
Maintenance log entry with date, technician name, filter condition, and actions taken.

Ensure all personnel are trained and certified for working at height
Inspect all PPE and fall protection equipment before use
Secure all tools and materials to prevent falling
Use barricades and signage to restrict access below the work area
Ensure weather conditions are suitable (no high winds or rain)
Maintain three-point contact when climbing
Assign a standby person for emergency support
Emergency rescue plan must be in place and communicated
