What is Descriptive Writing?

Descriptive writing is when you use words to paint a picture in the

reader’s mind. It appeals to the five senses — sight, sound, smell, taste,
and touch — to help the reader imagine exactly what you describe.

🌈 Key Features of Descriptive Writing

1. Sensory Details – describe what you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel.
Example: The salty breeze brushed against my face.

2. Figurative Language – use similes, metaphors, and personification.

Example: The sun smiled warmly over the sleepy village.*

3. Strong Adjectives and Verbs – choose words that show emotion and
mood.
Example: The ancient house creaked as the wind howled outside.*

4. Clear Focus – describe one main thing (a person, place, or event) in

detail.

5. Organization – use paragraphs to separate different ideas or senses.

✏️Descriptive Paragraph Example

A Day at the Beach

The golden sand sparkled under the blazing sun, stretching as far as my eyes
could see. Waves crashed playfully against the shore, their foamy edges
racing to tickle my toes. The air smelled of salt and seaweed, and the cries of
seagulls echoed above. Children’s laughter mixed with the rhythm of the
ocean, creating a melody of pure joy. As I lay on my towel, the warmth of the
sun hugged me, and I felt completely at peace.

🧠 Tips for Writing Descriptively

 Imagine you are showing, not telling.

Don’t say “The garden was beautiful.”
Say “Bright tulips and roses danced in the morning breeze, their petals
glistening with dew.”

Instead of “big,” say “enormous” or “towering.”

 Add feelings and atmosphere.

Describe how the scene makes you feel.
