Understanding Cell Membrane Functions

The cell membrane is a crucial organelle that separates the cell's interior from the external environment, composed mainly of a phospholipid bilayer that provides flexibility and functionality. It plays essential roles in nutrient transport, communication, and maintaining cell safety, while its absence would lead to cell death. In comparison to other organelles like the nucleus, Golgi apparatus, and lysosomes, the cell membrane exhibits superior leadership qualities by actively managing cellular processes and interactions.

The cell membrane is a large organelle that

WHAT IS THE surrounds the cytosol within, and it is known

for separating the interior of the cell from the
CELL MEMBRANE? external environment. It already acts as a
security guard who also happens to provide
additional functions with different types of
proteins that carry out various sets of
functions. Its flexible shape gives it its
characteristics.
WHAT ARE
PHOSPHOLIPIDS?

Phospholipids are the main

component of a cell membrane
and the cell membrane consists
of a bilayer, meaning two layers

2. WHY SHOULD THE CELL
MEMBRANE BE ELECTED?
The plasma membrane has a semi-

2. FLEXIBILITY Cell Membrane dictates the shape of the

component, and it can easily bend and

nature. Shape changing is crucial for

3. LISTENS TO The cell membrane uses its multitude of
proteins to communicate with other cells or
THE PEOPLE signals. For example, receptor proteins bind
to signals and other molecules to execute
certain cellular processes. Other proteins
assist in cell communication and recognition,
which can tell the cell to combine or

4. PROVIDES
The cell membrane has the ability to
SAFETY AND detect any substance that is lethal or
toxic to the cell, and it will move any
SECURITY substance out of the cell, maintaining
internal balances and preventing cell
death.
It could also develop a resistance
to incorrect duplication, which
WAYS THE could cure cancer altogether

MEMBRANE WILL The membrane would make the

cell better with specialization in

proteins to have specific and

Enhance cell communications in
and out of the cell to minimize
errors.
Strengthen defense and security,
which can create adaptive
defenses.
WHAT IF THERE Without the membrane, the cell would
WAS NO die, and it would be unable to
maintain ideal conditions. It would
MEMBRANE also restrict resources that other
organelles need, which would
ultimately kill the entire cell. Without
the membrane, the cell couldn’t even
survive a second without it getting
itself killed. Voting for it would help it
carry out its function even better
and ensure that it never happens.
LET'S DISCUSS WHY THE CELL MEMBRANE IS
THE MOST OPTIMAL FOR CHIEF.
Nucleus The nucleus is unproductive and doesn’t
actually contribute to the cell compared to
other organelles.
Just sits at the center and bosses all the
organelles around
Too dependent, as it relies on other proteins
and organelles to replicate its DNA or perform
functions
Nucleus cannot send messages without the
membrane or even nutrients and proteins.
Nucleus only talks to mRNA, which doesn’t
show leadership qualities.
Too selfish as it keeps all the information
inside itself.
The Nucleus and its proteins are the reason
why mutations occur, which can be really
effective negatively.
Changes and relations with the cell can cause
CANCER.
Golgi Appartus Do you really want Amazon to empower the
world?
Functions are not effective compared to the cell
membrane, and all the Golgi does is ship out /
package protein (SURE it isn’t leadership qualities).
It has no control over which of its items/packages
go to its destination or not (controlled by the
membrane).
Can’t talk to the outside world or the inside of a
cell (what pathetic qualities for someone who
wants to be a leader).
Without the Cell Membrane shipping it out, the
Golgi is useless.
Golgi takes all the credit for shipping it out, which
is typically selfish and a non-leadership
characteristic.
Leadership requires action, and the Golgi that
hides in the middle of the cell is not leadership.
Also how will the Golgi perform its actions if its

The ER relies on materials from other
organelles in the endomembrane system
Relies on vesicles to travel and drop off
materials to synthesize newer needed
materials
Relies on cell membrane to get the materials
into the cytosol
Relies on the ribosomes to bound onto the ER
and produce the proteins (takes credit for the
ribosomes work?)
Accumulating too much misfolded proteins
will cause the ER to trigger apoptosis (sudden
cell death)
Vulnerable to stress due to its multitude of
materials (calcium, proteins, lipids) and can
cause diseases or damage
Excessive ER stress causes dysfunction and a
wide range of diseases from
neurodegenerative diseases to even causing
strokes
Lysosomes Lysosomes are not particularly important or
effective in the cell, as they primarily recycle and
break down waste, and do not
interact/communicate with other cellular
components.
Lysosomes are categorized as dangerous because
they contain an enzyme that can damage the cell
from the inside.
Lysosomes depend on other organelles.
Lysosomes clean up damage after they are done;
the membrane prevents damage from happening.
The cell can temporarily survive without
lysosomes.
Lysosomes cannot be in non-acidic regions/liquids
Lysosomes are not found in prokaryotic cells,
which shows their absence and inability to be the
chief.
Lysosomes are easily damaged, which makes them
not a good leader as they can just release all their
dangerous enzymes.
The Cytoskeleton is a very LAZY organelle
Doesn’t do anything but just lie in the same
place all the time
Components of cytoskeleton are easily
disassembled (microtubules and
microfilaments)
If ruptured, whole cell collapses
Can rupture before mitosis and even cause
cancer within the 2 new daughter cells
Can lead to neurodegenerative diseases like
Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s
Not needed in bacteria/prokaryotic cells
If malfunctioned, can cause permanent
cellular damage or even apoptosis (sudden
cell suicide)
Easily affected by external pathogens and
mechanical stress, leading to malfunction and
collapse
