Step 1: Configure Your Settings
1. Open the Blackmagic Camera App
First, download and open the app. You’ll notice it’s designed to mimic the interface of
professional cinema cameras—don’t worry, I’ll guide you through it.
2. Navigate to the Settings Menu
Tap the settings icon (gear icon).
3. Set the Codec to H.265
• Under the codec section, choose H.265. This codec handles 4K videos more efficiently
than H.264, allowing for higher quality footage at smaller file sizes.
• Pro Tip: The higher the bitrate, the sharper and more professional your footage will look.
Step 2: Enable 4K and Adjust Color Space
1. Switch to 4K Resolution
In the settings menu, ensure the resolution is set to 4K for maximum clarity and detail in your
videos.
2. Head to the Color Space Tab
• Here, you’ll find options like Rec709, Apple Log, or SLog3.
• Rec709: This is a standard color format used for TVs and displays—it’s what you’re
seeing now.
• Apple Log or SLog3: These are flat filming formats designed to preserve colors and
maximize dynamic range.
• They look dull at first but allow for incredible flexibility during color grading.
• Important: To make these look normal, you’ll need to convert them to Rec709 using a
LUT (don’t worry, I’ll show you how later).
Step 3: Choose Orientation and Save Settings
1. Decide the Orientation
• If you’re filming for Instagram or TikTok, enable vertical recording to keep your
content aligned with your audience’s feed.
• For YouTube or other horizontal platforms, keep this setting turned off for traditional
widescreen filming.
2. Set the Media Save Location
• Go to the Media Section and select Save to both In-App and Photo Library.
• This ensures your videos are saved to the app for further edits and to your iPhone’s
library for easy access.
How to Import a LUT Into the Blackmagic Camera App
Here’s how to bring cinematic color to life with a LUT:
1. Download the LUT
• If you don’t have one, comment “LUT” on my post, and I’ll send it to you or download it
for only $9.99 in my store.
2. Import the LUT
• Open the Blackmagic Camera App.
• Navigate to the Settings Menu and go to the LUT Section.
• Tap Import LUT and choose the file from your iPhone’s storage.
3. Apply the LUT
• Once imported, select the LUT from the list and apply it.
• Your video preview will instantly update, showing the rich, cinematic colors.
