Study Notes: The Human Brain
1. The Human Brain
Most powerful part of the body, delicate and gel-like. Controls thoughts, emotions, body functions,
and behavior. Divided into forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.
2. Parts of the Brain
A. Forebrain - Largest part; includes cerebrum. Controls higher functions: thinking, memory,
decision-making, learning.
B. Midbrain - Located between forebrain and hindbrain. Functions: eye movement, vision, hearing,
and auditory processing.
C. Hindbrain - Composed of:
- Cerebellum → movement & balance.
- Pons → arousal, sleep/wake cycle.
- Medulla Oblongata → regulates involuntary functions (breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure,
coughing, sneezing, vomiting, salivation).
3. The Limbic System (in Forebrain)
Hippocampus → learning and memory.
Amygdala → emotions (fear, anger, aggression).
Hypothalamus → hunger, thirst, temperature, circadian rhythm.
Thalamus → relay center for sensory information.
Cerebral Cortex → outer layer of cerebrum, responsible for higher cognitive processes.
4. Four Lobes of the Brain
Frontal Lobe → problem-solving, learning, organizing, decision-making.
Parietal Lobe → processes touch, pain, temperature, pressure.
Temporal Lobe → processes sound & language comprehension.
Occipital Lobe → processes visual information (color, movement, shapes).
5. Left vs Right Brain
Left Brain → logic, analysis, language, symbols, linear thinking, verbal skills.
Right Brain → creativity, intuition, holistic thinking, emotions, visual skills.
6. Whole Brain Theory (4 Quadrants)
Quadrant A (Analytical Thinking): logical, fact-based, quantitative.
Quadrant B (Practical Thinking): detailed, organized, planned, sequential.
Quadrant C (Relational Thinking): emotional, interpersonal, kinesthetic, feeling-based.
Quadrant D (Imaginative Thinking): creative, intuitive, holistic, synthesizing.
