AREA

The area of a shape is the amount of space enclosed within

the boundary of the shape.

Example

1) What is the area of a triangle with base 2 cm and height

4 cm?
!#$
Area of a Triangle =

% %
Area of a Triangle using Heron’s Formula

Note that (a + b + c) is the perimeter of the triangle.

()*)+
Therefore, 's' is the semi-perimeter which is:
%

Example

Find the area of a triangle with 3 sides given as: 3 cm, 6 cm,
and 7 cm.

area of the triangle using the Heron's formula.

𝑨 = +𝒔(𝒔 − 𝒂)(𝒔 − 𝒃)(𝒔 − 𝒄)

𝑨 = +𝟖(𝟖 − 𝟑)(𝟖 − 𝟔)(𝟖 − 𝟕)

𝑨 = √𝟖 𝐱 𝟓 𝐱 𝟐 𝐱 𝟏

𝑨 = √𝟒𝟎

Area ≈ 8.94 𝑐𝑚%

Exercise

1) Find the area of a triangle with sides of length 5 cm, 12

cm, and 13 cm.

2) A triangle has base 10 cm and height 15 cm. What is the

area?

3) Find the area of triangle ABC.

Area of a Parallelogram

Example

1) Find the area of the parallelogram with the base of 4 cm

and height of 5 cm.

Area of Parallelogram = b × h
A=4×5
A = 20 cm2
Therefore, the area of a parallelogram = 20 cm2

2) The base of the parallelogram is thrice its height. If the

area is 192 cm2, find the base and height.

Let the height of the parallelogram = h cm

then, the base of the parallelogram = 3h cm
Area of the parallelogram = 192 cm2

Area of parallelogram = base × height

192 = 3h × h
⇒ 3 × h2 = 192
⇒ h2 = 64
⇒ h = √64
⇒ h = 8 cm

Height of the parallelogram is 8 cm,

Breadth = 3 × h
=3×8
= 24 cm

Breadth of the parallelogram is 24 cm

Exercise

1) Find the area of a parallelogram whose base is 8 cm and

height is 4 cm.
2) Find the area of a parallelogram with a base equal to 7
m and height is 9 m.
3) The base of the parallelogram is thrice its height. If the
area is 147 𝑚% , then what is the value of its base and
height?
4) The area of a parallelogram is 500 𝑐𝑚% . Its height is
twice its base. Find the height and base.
Area of a circle
Example
If the length of the radius of a circle is 4 m % . Calculate its
area.

Area of a circle = pr %

A = 3.142 × 4%
A = 3.142 × 16
A = ≈ 50.27
The area of the circle is 50.27 m % .

Exercise
%%
1) Taking p to be , find the area of a circle with radius 7
.
cm.
2) Find the circumference and the area of a circle whose
radius is 14 m.
