THE AMAZING BOY WHO ATE BOOKS

Text and illustration: Oliver Jeffers

Henrique loved books.

But not exactly how we love books.
It wasn't quite the same...
... Henrique loved TO EAT books.

It all started on a beautiful afternoon, almost by chance, when he was distracted.

Still not knowing exactly what he was doing, he tried to eat just one word, just to
to prove.

Later, he tried to eat an entire sentence; and soon after, the whole page. .

Yes, there was no doubt: Henrique really liked books.

Three days later, I had already eaten an ENTIRE book.
And by the end of the month, they could swallow a whole book all at once.

Henrique liked all types of books: adventure books, dictionaries, atlases,

joke books, trivia books, even math books. But yours
favorites were the red books, which he devoured at the speed of a LIGHTNING.

But this is the best part: the more books I ate, the smarter I got.

He read a book about goldfish and learned what he should give to Pimpão. At
After a short time, Henrique was already helping his father with the crossword puzzles in the newspaper.

He was even smarter than the teacher in school.

Henrique loved to be clever. And he thought that if he continued like this, he could really
to become the smartest person in the world.

So, he continued to eat books...

And he continued to get smarter... and smarter... and smarter.

Instead of eating a whole book, he was already devouring three or four at the same time. Books
about anything. Henrique wasn't fussy, and wanted to know everything that existed.
to know.
And that's when things started to go less well.
In fact, things started to go very, very badly.
Henrique was eating too many books, and too quickly.

I was starting to feel a little unwell. And here comes the worst part. The things that
he had learned began to get all mixed up... he didn't have time for them
digest properly.
I would get embarrassed when I wanted to talk.

Suddenly, Henrique no longer felt so clever, all the

people told you not to eat books anymore.

Thus, Henrique gave up eating books and sat down, feeling sad for a while.
a long time. What could he do?

So, after a few days, and almost without thinking about it. Henrique picked up from the ground a
a book that was already somewhat eaten. But instead of putting it in his mouth... Henrique opened it... and
He started to read. And he saw that it was really good!

Henrique discovered that he liked to read. He even thought that if he read a lot, he could still
become the smartest person on the face of the Earth. It would just take a little longer.

Now Henrique is always reading... although, every now and then... (bite).
