WELCOME,
ASPIRING AUTHOR!
You are about to embark on a journey that goes beyond
the realm of simple storytelling. This guide is designed to
help you harness the power of shadow work to bring
depth, authenticity, and transformative power to your
writing.

As writers, our deepest fears and greatest desires often

lie in the shadows, the parts of ourselves we keep
hidden. Yet, it is in these shadows that our most
compelling stories reside. This guide will help you
uncover these hidden treasures, allowing your true voice
to shine through in your writing.

THE POWER OF
SHADOW WORK
Shadow work involves exploring the parts
of ourselves that we've denied, repressed,
or deemed unacceptable. Our shadows
hold the essence of our untold stories, the
stories that we are often afraid to tell, even
to ourselves.

By engaging in shadow work, you as an

author can tap into a wellspring of
emotions, experiences, and characters that
resonate with authenticity and truth. This
exploration not only enriches your writing
but also leads to personal growth and
transformation.

EMBRACING YOUR
LIFE STORY
Your life experiences are your canvas, so it’s essential to
embrace each aspect of your journey, including the
shadows.

Identify Your Shadows:

Reflect on the parts of your life you tend to avoid or diminish, as well as
the emotions, experiences, or parts of your personality that you
typically avoid or suppress. These could be painful memories, failures,
unfulfilled dreams and feelings of anger, jealousy, or even
unacknowledged desires and aspirations.

Write From Your Whole Self:

Embrace vulnerability in your writing. Authentic narratives come from
acknowledging both your strengths and weaknesses. Allow yourself to
write from these shadowy places. Remember, the most compelling
narratives are those that stem from a place of truth and authenticity.

Transform Shadows into Insight:

Use your life's shadows as a source of wisdom and insight. This deep
exploration can bring profound depth to your writing.

HOW MY SHADOW
IMPACTED MY WRITING
As the author of seven books, including four teaching memoirs and
two prescriptive nonfiction journals, here’s what I want you know:
Whatever you are hiding, withholding, feeling shame or
embarrassment about, whatever you don’t want anyone else to know,
is the golden key that will ultimately connect you with your ideal reader
and allow them to deeply resonate.

After I published my first book, a collection of poems primarily about

the ending of my marriage, I embarked upon writing my first
teaching memoir, Jump . . . And Your Life Will Appear. While working
with my editor on the book outline, in which each step of the
process began with a story of my own to illustrate the concept, I was
face to face with my shadow.

Starting with Step One of Jump: Admit to Yourself What You Already
Know, and given that my editor also happened to be (and still is) my
bestie, she said, almost dismissively, “Well, we already know the
personal story you’ll tell here is of having an affair and your then-
husband reading your journals.”

Panicked, I replied, “Oh no no no, that is not the story!! That is not a
story I will ever put into a book!!”

Gently closing her laptop, she simply said, “Okay. When you are
ready to tell that story, you’ll be ready to write this book.”

What I discovered is that while I’d been plumbing the depths of my

shadow for years, there was still a residue of shame holding me
back from sharing my truth.

Here’s the deal: I didn’t want anyone to know my truth, for fear of
being judged. What became clear to me is that I was still judging
myself. Once I did the internal shadow work necessary to free
myself, I no longer had any velcro for anyone else’s judgment to
stick.

To this day, readers of Jump reach out to me to share their own

experiences of infidelity, having their journals read, being married to
an abusive narcissist, being a people-pleaser, peacekeeper,
perfectionist, overachiever, conflict-avoider, etc. Readers reach out
because they resonate with me and my willingness to stand in my
truth. Your readers will do the same, if you’re willing to embrace
your shadow.

DEEPENING YOUR
SELF-DISCOVERY
The journey to finding your true voice begins within. Deepen
your introspection with these self-discovery prompts, which
will also guide you in uncovering the layers of your story that
can resonate deeply with your readers.

What are the stories I tell myself about my worth and

capabilities as a writer?

Instead of wondering, “Who am I to write this book?” ask

yourself, “Who am I to write this book?!”

How have the narratives and stories I've internalized about

my talent and potential shaped my writing journey?

What life events have I been hesitant to explore in my

writing?

How have my hidden fears and desires shaped my life's

journey?

In what ways have I changed or grown from confronting my

shadows?

What lessons have I learned from the darker chapters of

my life?

What experiences from my past am I avoiding or glossing
over in my writing?

What parts of me have I been afraid to explore in my writing?

What personal truths am I hesitant to confront?

Which moments in my life do I find difficult to revisit?

In what ways have I censored my creativity out of fear or

embarrassment?

What themes or topics do I find myself repeatedly drawn

to, and why?

By answering these questions, you begin a journey of self-

discovery that will imbue your writing with depth and honesty.

INTEGRATING
SELF-DISCOVERY
INTO YOUR WRITING
With deeper self-discovery, you can transform your
shadows into compelling narratives. Here are some ways to
integrate your inner revelations into your writing:

Incorporate Personal Shadows into Your Story:

Use your personal shadows to add depth and authenticity to your
memoir or nonfiction work. These elements will make your narrative
more relatable and compelling.

Use Life Lessons as Key Themes:

Let the lessons you've learned from your shadows become central
themes in your writing. Themes like resilience, transformation, or
redemption can add a powerful dimension to your story.

Maintain Your Authentic Voice:

As you explore your shadows, ensure that your unique voice and
perspective remain at the heart of your narrative. This authenticity is
what will connect with your readers.
