Sterility Indicators in Clinical Settings

This document describes different types of sterility indicators used to validate sterilization processes. It outlines physical, biological, and chemical indicators, as well as specific tests such as the Bowie-Dick test and process challenge packs. The main objective of the indicators is to verify that medical equipment has been properly sterilized and meets quality standards.

STERILITY INDICATORS

What is sterilization?

It consists of the destruction of all forms of microbial life, including spores (the spores
they are the microorganisms most resistant to heat, chemical agents, and radiation).
A sterile object is considered to be one that has undergone the different processes of
sterilization.
Before introducing the material into any sterilization system, it must be dry, clean and
well packed to prevent the passage of germs.

STERILITY INDICATORS

Sterilization indicators are devices or reagents aimed at certifying or

validate that the process was carried out properly. The indicators are classified as: physical,
chemical and biological.
OBJECTIVES:
Meet quality standards.
2. Verify that the equipment is sterile.
3. Verify that they have undergone a sterilization process.
4. Monitor the processes.

Chemical Indicators

They are devices that contain chemical substances that change color when exposed to a
or more critical variables of a sterilization process.
They ensure the correct operation of the sterilizer and that the internal conditions of the chamber
reach the sterilization parameters, allowing for early detection of failures.
Sterilization parameters:
•Vapor saturado: tiempo, temperatura, vapor saturado.
•Oxido de etileno: temperatura, tiempo, humedad relativa, oxido de etileno.
Dry heat: temperature and time.
Hydrogen peroxide: time, temperature, H202

means a rapid penetration of
