Clessie Cummins and these Giants of the Highways

Large vehicles, equipped with a powerful engine, large wheels, a large

frame, the perfect vehicle for transporting heavy loads, such as bags and sacks of flour,
freshly cut trees, water in large quantities, concrete, products in general that only
these means of transport can be capable of taking from one point to another, and when I say from one
I can refer to point to point even going from one country to another exporting and importing goods.

Of course, to propel a vehicle that weighs on average about 16,000 kg and measures between about 6 to 7
subways are not easy, but stopping it? That is indeed a complicated task, that's why in our
conventional trucks have different types of brakes, such as actuator brakes
hydraulic, pneumatic, parking, and even electric, although they are quite sophisticated
these systems cannot completely stop these 16 tons, which is why they need help,
this is where the brakes that we can use thanks to the M.C.I come into play, like the well-known
and slightly silent Jacobs brakes.

It is inappropriate to talk about this brake system without knowing its creator, Clessie Lyle Cummins, a
American, who was an inventor, mechanic, and entrepreneur, who improved diesel engines, created
its own Cummins diesel engine, and invented the great Jacobs Engine Brake translated into Spanish as
engine brake jacobs, commonly referred to as 'retarder', which can stop the truck
almost with the same force with which it is propelled.
The diesel engine used as a compressor

This brake serves to stop the operation of the diesel engine, this maneuver helps to
reduce the speed of the vehicle without the driver having to continuously use the service brakes and
improve control over the vehicle. This way, the maintenance of service brakes is extended,
we save maintenance costs and, most importantly, we help avoid the fading effect of these
same.

The jake brake is a device located under the valve cover of the engine, and above
from the valve train, this type of brake helps to slow down the movement and control the vehicle. When
activating, the engine brake alters the operation of the engine's exhaust valves, so that
the engine works as an air compressor and absorbs power. In this way, a
action of delay or deceleration in the wheels of the vehicle, which allows for better control
vehicle as previously mentioned without using the service brakes.

It is of utmost importance to mention that this braking system does not damage the engine, from a visual perspective.

This system consists of a base where we have:

Solenoid valve
2. Control valve
3. Master piston
4. Injector plunger and roller
5. Relief valve
6. Assemble auxiliary piston
7. Leveling screw
8. Adjustment screw of the auxiliary piston
9. Accumulator

In summary, these components together allow the opening of the exhaust valves.
during engine compression, thus turning it into a compressor that generates a delay in it
diesel engine.
In addition to these components of the system of
Jacobs brakes also have some additional parts that allow the control of this brake,
like the engine brake switches that are found on the dashboard.

Switch with 2 modes of high / low:

"Low" mode activates three cylinders and provides a braking power of approximately
50%.
The 'high' mode will activate all six cylinders and provide full braking power.

High/medium/low switch:

The 'low' setting activates two cylinders, and provides approximately one third of the horsepower.
total braking.
The 'medium' adjustment activates four cylinders and provides approximately two-thirds of the horsepower.

of total braking.
The 'high' setting will activate the cylinders, and provides full braking horsepower.

Its operation is carried out in steps:

1. By activating the engine brake, the solenoid valve is energized, allowing pressurized oil to flow through the

control valve to the master piston and auxiliary piston.

2. The oil pressure causes the master piston to move down, which results in this
I stayed on the arm of the injector rocker.
3. The arm lifts, forcing the master piston upward and generating an oil flow from a
high pressure to the auxiliary piston, this pressure is necessary for the check valve
ball, as its name suggests, it holds high pressure oil in the master cylinder.
auxiliary.
4. When the engine piston is in compression, the auxiliary piston descends thanks to the
oil pressure, which causes the opening of the exhaust valves, releasing the air
that has been compressed by the piston to the exhaust manifold.
5. Then at the lower end of the auxiliary piston stroke, it separates from the valve.
ball retention, which allows the flow of oil to the accumulator. This reduces the pressure
of oil noticeably in the high-pressure circuit, allowing the retraction of the piston
to assist and have the engine exhaust valves close in order to prepare for

In the background, the pressure retained in the accumulator allows this system to be

Jake brake is present in a wide range of trucks around the world such as:

Freightliner Argosy
Mack Granite
Kenworth W900A, K104
Volvo VNL770, NL12

In summary, this braking system is quite sophisticated, yet simple and easy to learn.
operation, from simple solenoids to retaining exhaust gases, helps us in
together with the service brakes, so that our truck has a braking system
efficient, safe, and stable for drivers' driving.
